Richard Metcalfe introduced Merv for the evening by mentioning Merv's various achievements, but not by way of obituary or eulogy. Merv is a local boy, attended compulsory military training, qualified as an electrician, married Janet and together they had three children. Merv joined Matamata Rotary on 19 August 1969 at the age of 33. Merv was president in 1984/85. Played trombone, guitar and bass in the band Flat Hedgehogs, so named because they played "middle of the road". In 1987/88 Merv was selected as leader of a Group Study Exchange to England. That trip was Merv's first real overseas travel. Merv awarded Paul Harris Fellow in 1992. Was District Governor representative over six years. 2016 Sapphire pin.
Merv was then interviewed by David Hulme. 1969 was an all male busy club. Very formal. It was a privileged group and an honour to be invited to join. You are never too busy to join Rotary because most of the meetings happen over dinner time. President was Merv's favourite role. Rotary has enhanced lives here, throughout district and internationally. The GSE trip was wonderfully educational. Merv has been involved with many wonderful projects. It is a challenge keeping younger members coming through who are committed to serving others. Merv has been inspiring and a great mentor. Nice letter read out from Maite, exchange student from Belgium. Letter from Mark Maloney (President of Rotary International) presented, congratulating Merv on his 50 year membership of Rotary.
Merv thanked the club and those present tonight for good spirit, fun and achieving things at the same time.
