Fred Barrett presented President Alice Albright with a banner given to him by a gentleman from the Rotary Club of Frydek-Mistek, District 2240 in the Czech Republic. Apparently the gentleman was touring the country in search of relatives and had found more than he ever knew he had.

President Alice gave us a quick rundown of the Rotary Club of Duluth in Georgia. This club are very strong advocates of helping families with food parcels and a special project called Farmers to Families which has helped to distribute food to over 1 million families throughout the USA.

They are also great supporters of their local Salvation Army and hold some great fundraisers like their Annual In The Rough Golf Tournament and an Annual Car Show. Great work Duluth. 😊

Our Speakers for this evening were Miranda Thompson and Danielle from Westpac Bank who came to give us some information about the high risks of scams and fraud in todays society. Miranda told us that 1 in 3 people have been scammed.
That's pretty mind boggling.

Here are a few of the pointers that they gave us.

Questions to ask yourself if you think you have been scammed.
1. Have I been contacted unexpectedly?
2. Have I been promised something?
3. Have I been asked to do something?

Some of the common types of scams are - Romance, Online Job, Online Trading, Inheritance, Lottery, Phone and Card Fraud. 1.

Scammers call pretending to be from a trusted source, eg. a bank and they request personal information. Be extremely cautious of callers purporting to be from a bank, the Police or any other person or organisation claiming you owe them money.
2. Call the organisation back on their listed number, not the number the caller may give you.
3.Don't give them any personal information and never give your pin number to anyone.
4. Regularly check your account balance and report any suspicious activity.

Remember - Your bank will never contact you to:
> Confirm any secure banking information (Password, Customer ID, Account or Credit Card Details, PIN number)
> Inform you that they have lost some of your personal details.
> Ask you to send personal details over e-mail
>Say that someone else has logged in to your account
>Ask you to login to Online Banking from an email

If you think you have been scammed, notify your bank straight away. Change your online banking password immediately. Report the scam to the NZ Police , Netsafe and CERT NZ. By reporting you will help prevent others from being scammed.

Speaker thanks was in the hands of Merv King and Danielle was delighted to receive the Certificate of Thanks, saying that she hadn't been given a certificate since she left school. 😊

And on another note, this night was the last official night for this years Sergeant Murray Wills. He has done an outstanding job throughout the year and we have had a load of laughs. Well done Murray.
