Peter's opening comments was the Gorge Tunnel Loop, Karangahake. Yet another bit of Kiwiana of the previous main railway access to the Bay of Plenty from the Waikato, now a walk and cycle way. He then brought members attention to the latest RDU. An article by R.I. President Ian Risely, he read out part of a speech, titled View from the Top. Which covered sustainability of the organisation, such as strengthen our Club's, gender balance ,age and our personal vocation as a member, Service above Self. Rotary worldwide is "Making a Difference". Peter also noted the changes for ease of grant application process. He has just filed an application for a District Grant, for the next stage of the Rotary Matamata Walkway project. Lincoln students now confirmed as fifty six (56) for each hosting date 20th & 22nd August, except our shunt sheet indicates a significant shortfall hosts. He asked the meeting to spread the word for student hosts, to friends and family to help us with this project.

Graham Motion introduced James, which included "a local lad that has done well". James opening remark was the impact Rotary has with "End Polio Now". He suggested when that project is successfully completed, perhaps Rotary could focus on HIV. 7 years in Canada with University of Manitoba ,in genetics to pursue a vaccine solution for HIV. His enthusiastic vocation led to being associated with the University in field work in Narobi, that involved the Pumwani Sex Workers Cohort. Their support to provide data very crucial to map and discover science in STD's, that included Chancroid bacteria in commercial sex worker's. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. AIDS, Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is the most advanced stage of HIV infection.
HIV can be transmitted through contact with infected blood, and body fluids.
Then the disease is usually asymptomatic until it progresses to AIDS.
No cure exists for AIDS, but strict adherence to antiretroviral regimens (ARVs) can dramatically slow the disease's progress as well as prevent secondary infections and complications.How it spreads is by blood products (unclean needles or unscreened blood), mother to baby by pregnancy, labour, or breast feeding and by having unprotected sex. James noted the support also of the Belinda and Bill Gates Foundation, that supported gaining knowledge in Unique Microflora with special antivirus proteins in a small percentage of sex worker's with a negative HIV, sought of a natural immunity also referred as Calm Immune Systems. Which all helps in development of vaccines. Also probiotic yogurt enhances HIV treatment. More intensive research is being studied on Calm Immune Systems. BUT not there yet with an HIV vaccine. Some stats in James very comprehensive presentation were: Left New Zealand as a back packer with 15kgs of gear, came back in 2013 with a beautiful wife, 3 kids and 150kgs of luggage! from Winnipeg where it is a balmy minus 10c to 40c below in winter. showed map that Russia and sub Sahara are hot points for HIV. 40 million people worldwide have HIV, 4 million every year! about 200 HIV positives in New Zealand. James current work in NZ is genetics with bees. Did a stint in the UK with Bumble Bees, due to some decline in numbers. Canola Oil seed production in the UK has been affected by a lower population of the Humble Bumble Bee. David Hulme thanked James for his presentation, and presented a certificate of appreciation that also saw the club donate funds to End Polio Now.

Dani, gracious thank you to Miranda and family, for hosting her last College term, now with Krishna and Santhy this term. Dani is now just over half way through her Rotary Youth Exchange , and still has some "wish list to do" to gain more knowledge experience of New Zealand. Peter Thissen, has successfully sprayed Willow Tree's at our Concert venue. For a long term control, A specie of Wasp will be released when the ambient temperature reaches 15c, and the natural food the budding Willows will excrete that will also keep them interested to have these willows as their home base. The biological control, is that the Wasps will inject an egg into the Aphid and the wasp pupae will eat from the inside out wards the aphid. Progress on this will be updated by Peter as

David Parker shared his PHF with his father.
David Parker was able to show and share with his father, his recently presented Paul Harris Fellowship recognition which included his medallion, Badge and Certificate prior to his father's passing. Thank you David for sharing that information with us at our meeting.

Seven weeks ago, Junk Food Free June. July is Dry July. Every Tuesday enters into her Ipod App, her weight . After seven weeks, her phone sang her weight loss of 13kgs !!! Was quite rapt at that, no wonder she had every right to smile. The only thing 'Slim' wants to do now, is to go on holiday to Vietnam and buy a new wardrobe of clothes.
Dani very happy and secure with Rotary Matamata. Who is now half way through her Rotary Youth Exchange. She thanked Miranda Thomson and family, for being her host family last school term. Miranda is a bank manager and now her next host family, Krishna and Santhy Narayanasami, are Dentist's. No toothaches this term! bulletin editor thinks !!
