Peter welcomed everyone, especially guest speaker Pru Etchevery and guest Tony Wilding. Also acknowledged our club member and District Governor 9930 Leonie Tisch. Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. Peter said he got involved with fund raising activities associated with the Lake Tarawera Trust. He highlighted some fund raising history of Rotary Matamata 1953/54, when Wilbert Marks was president. Tokanui Hospital- Books: Courtesy Conduct competition - for sales staff of shops: Matamata Library-Books: International Letters - to off shore Rotary Clubs: Golden Jubilee- float: Essay Competition-senior students and an Urban/Rural night. 63 years later, What has changed? Nothing! Our Club is currently active with Red Nose Day: Spud in the Bucket: Christmas Trees: The Walkway project: sponsoring and hosting students and adults -for Rotary supported educational opportunities: Support Rotary initiatives. Service Above Self that benefits our community here and Rotary projects around the world. District grant received for our walkway project,$2730.00. We did apply for $5k but there were many applications for district funds this term.
Guest speaker Pru Etcheverry, It soon became very obvious of her commitment to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Our Club member Lyn Dobbe expressed appreciation of the research advances for treatment regimes, that enabled her to recover from a very serious blood disorder.

Chief Executive Officer of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, introduced to the meeting assembly by David Hulme David certainly indicated Pru Etcheverry has a long association with Rotary Matamata. Pru as CEO, has a team of eleven Health Degree qualified in this field of medicine They are always available on the end of a phone 24/7.Patient support is paramount. Information and education is a continuous process. Promoting awareness of blood deseases. Advocasy for families who have a family member with a severe blood disorder. Many issues are negotiated and sorted to support treatment processes, for that means being very close to a hospital in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland for an extended time. It the patient is a child, then Starship Hospital in Auckland is the only option. Research has come along way, and new knowledge is increasing all the time. Different types of treatment are now based on patient genomes in their DNA makeup. Drugs can now be formulated in tablet form, where as before intravenous infusion (i.v.) was the only way to introduce medication into the human body. One unintended consequence of self administration in their home environment of prescribed tablet form medication, is young people had expired due to not taking their oral medicine as instructed. That has been addressed by continuous digital communication reminders to people, that can have their condition treated by prescribed oral drug(s); to take their medicine. Some conditions, can only be treated by Chemotherapy. Which does have some down sides, such as side effect reaction to the cocktail of drugs and infertility. Drug access and cost wise is cheaper because of generic drug production. A 92% survival rate now, because of research and development advancement in patient evaluation, which treatment regimes that can be drug specific to science of the patient human body DNA genome makeup. Statistics are: on average, every 4 hours in NZ there is a blood cancer diagnosis. Everyday there are 40 patient referrals: every week, 40 family assistance vouchers. That range from petrol to food: Every year , the really big issue for 100's of families in NZ is to be relocated; so to be very near a hospital either in Christchurch, Wellington or Auckland. Precision target medicines science is advancing, and Zebra fish, those tiny transparent home aquarium specie are helping positive world breaking research. Zebra fish blood making is identical to humans!
LBCNZ are very appreciative of the corporate support they receive and the donation funding that is forthcoming for research in New Zealand. Research has improved survival rates, has improved side effects of drugs, is finding cures, is understanding causes and has advanced precision medicine. Dave Johnson thanked Pru for her fully understood presentation, and as Chair of Matamata Leukaemia Research Trust, presented a cheque for $30,000 dollars: to support on going research.

"Walkway ready to go" Wednesday 25TH Oct.., Mid pm onwards, working bee: wheel barrows, rakes/shovels. A hammer or two if enough people turn out to do some fence rails. There will also be a need to dig in some posts. 15 m of concrete to be done after all that has been done. Report on this working bee next week. well on the way that will see another community Rotary project, add value to Matamata and District.

Clubs visits are going extremely well. I have now completed 37 of the 51 Clubs and am really pleased how well they have gone.
Last two weeks I did 10 Clubs, very busy but very rewarding.
If any members are interested in joining me they will need to book in with the respective Club for a meal. I may also be able to take two in my car.
I am visiting Putaruru on Thursday for a "purple night" so if any members are interested in supporting our neighbouring Club let President Judith Bennett know please - judithbennett91@gmail.com.

20 years ago,a Rotary GSE ( Great Social Experience !) but more correctly Group Study Exchange for a young man to the Netherlands (Holland). Which happened to be his family homeland, and of course at Rotary expense. This GSE exchange was contacted many years later to build Kevin's home in Matamata. Peter Vossen was that GSE exchange, and Kevin smiles at that fact, and appreciates his input and leadership as Club President.
