A few things coming up to keep in mind:
     
  • Please, please remember to put your apologies in before 9am on a Rotary day, this includes non diners please. We are still having trouble with a lot of members not apologising and just not showing up. 
  •  
  • We are looking for a possible candidate for the upcoming RYLA camp. Applications must be in before the end of February. If you know of a possible candidate, please contact Max McIvor asap. 
  •  
  • A big shout out reminder that it is our District 9930 Conference 17th -19th May this year.... right on our doorstep in Cambridge, so let's see if we can all go along and reap the benefits of a fantastic conference. You will all have received an email from our District Governor Bill Robinson outlining the details of the conference, so get your early-bird registration in now. Please get in touch with David Hulme if you are interested in going - even if you haven't decided for sure as yet, as he is trying to gage numbers.

  • Spud In A Bucket weigh-in on 5th March. Stew will be needing some helpers on the night so please add your name to the shunt sheet if you can help. I hope you have all been nurturing your spuds over the holiday season. Looking forward to seeing a few bumper crops.

  • Just a reminder that Stew is looking for helpers for the Hobbiton Hafling Marathon on 23rd March which we help with, so don't forget to put your name on the shunt sheet if you can help.

The lucky person to try and guess the Mystery Rotarian last week was Maz McIvor. 
 
The Clues for the mystery Rotarian, were –
 
1) I spent the first 5 years of my life    on a sheep and beef farm.
2) My name has been passed down      through the generations. Three of        four generations have the same name.
3) I was chosen to represent NZ in a competition in America but I was out of the country so couldn’t go.
 
Maz tried her best to try and figure this one out and managed to establish that it was a female member of the club and after eliminating a good portion of the ladies, took a stab in the dark and said that she thought it was Beth Taylor. Unfortunately she was wrong so had to pay a fine. It was in fact Alice Albright.
 
Good try Maz.

1) I once visited the Walsh Flying School and with an instructor, flew a dual engine Cessna over Matamata.
2) For a while, I worked in a butter factory making export butter for the United Kingdom
3) I am a second generation Rotarian.

Hi everyone.
 
Well she's a bit blustery out there today, so a good time to get the newsletter done. . 
 
David Hulme opened the meeting by giving us a brief rundown of the history or the Rotary Bell, which began in 1922. The ringing of the bell symbolizes order, discipline and the time to guide us through our weekly hour and a half meetings. 
 
David then invited Michelle Tanner to come forward and she presented Sue Whiting with her pin on becoming a member of the Polio Plus Society. Michelle encouraged all members to think about becoming a member of the Society, by pledging their donation to this great cause. If you are interested, please contact Michelle and she will help you through the process. 
 
 
David then announced that our Good Sort for the week was Gary Lewis for all of his enthusiastic help at Matamata Country Lodge with there Spuds in a Bucket.

Our speaker this week was Rose Carnachan, ably assisted by
Rebecca Brophy, both from Matamata Futures Trust. 
 
 
Rose and Rebecca came to give us a rundown on the proposed and badly needed new playground for Matamata. As most will know that our playground is in a bad state and in need of a major upgrade. 
 
 
Rose and Rebecca are part of a 7 strong working group and have engaged a playground/landscape designer to help with this mammoth project. As with anything of this scale, the biggest hurdle will be raising the funds. Although they have a generous Council contribution, they are aiming to come up with some sponsorship packages for Businesses, clubs and even Family donations to help bridge the gap.  
 
Below is the current proposed but not finalized plan for the project, so as you can see, it is one mighty big task 
 
   
 
As a new grandparent, I can now appreciate how important a great playground is. It becomes a focal meeting point for family and friends and the children just love it. The plan is to incorporate a bar-b-que area with picnic tables and seating also, for all to enjoy.
