Hi there fellow Rotarians!
We had a very interesting and informative speaker in Peter Thissen on Tuesday night, telling us about the Natural Gas system in Europe from 1969 to 1982, which he was involved in constructing. Tapping into gas 3kms underground. Lots of interesting statistics and photos.
On 6th February 1972, around the time of the oil crisis, there was a bomb blast which resulting in millions of dollars of damage. Prior to this they had minimal to no security and after this event, they had over 250 security guards, some with dogs, a double fence around the perimeter with double gates, lots of security cameras and continuous checks when entering and leaving.
Peter, Ineke and Lisette came to New Zealand on 17th February 1982. He joined Matamata Rotary in 1984 and has been a treasured, well loved and cheeky member for 38 years. Great work Peter!
