Peter welcomed friends and guests, Ces Barrett, Jill Druery, Derek Farrelly and Saskia van Waaijenburg. Instead of a bit of Rotary history, was intrigued by the saying 'arm and a leg!' as he had recently just contacted building material suppliers for quotation of product Peter required. Enquiring as to financial consideration, both independently said "it's going to cost you an arm and a leg". One origin to that idiom is that before the camera , pictures were portrait painted. The arm and legs of the human anatomy takes up a lot of time. So when clients and painter start discussing the commission of a portrait, negotiation starts off with a head only portrait, then if you want a fuller painted picture then extra costs for an 'arm and a leg'. Guest speaker Saskia van Waaijenburg, Matamata born with Dutch ancestry. One of two deputy principal's of west Auckland Massey College, school roll is just over two thousand (>2000). Miss 'V' to her students, whose makeup consists of sixty five (65) ethnic origins.
Her curriculum to her students is history and social studies. Her parents and partner arrived in time to hear her presentation, on an inspiring two week study tour to Yad Vashem , Israel January of this year.
Saskia van Waaijenburg introduced by Michelle Tanner, spoke passionately about the Nazi Holocaust that Yad Vashem Museum and Historical archives has available to present. Saskia, was one of a twenty six tour party of New Zealand educators. Yad Vashem was opened in 1953, in the State of Israel to memorialize the victims and heroes of the Sho'ah or as we know it, the holocaust 70 years ago in Europe. Saskia was inspired to go on this study tour, when attended the Wellington Holocaust of 1933 to 1945 Centre in Wellington. Lectured by experts at Yad Vashem, met Elle Wiesen; a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and holocaust survivor. "The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference". The Holocaust was not an accident. The Adolf Hitler Nazi regime was cultured in many countries of Europe of that infamous era, which supported the holocaust. Saskia uses this historical atrocity as a topic for Humanity in the classroom, but is very cautious on how to teach this historical study. Yad Vashem is a chronological history museum of 1933 to 1945, where the claustrophobic point through the museum was at the time line of Operation Barbarossa (invasion of Russia) and the when the zealous zenith roundup of Jews to Auchwitz and the like. Also on site were sculptures to the victims, Righteous Persons List of those who helped people to escape from the holocaust. There is also an actual railway cattle wagon, that was used to transport victims. Elle Wisen," To forget the Holocaust, is to kill twice". Saskia and her tour party met two more survivors who were very young at the time, but knew the implications if they were caught.Also visited the female accessible Western Wall (The Wailing wall), visited Palestine, the history of the ' six day war', absorbed the culture and food. There is no mixing of dairy or meat food and definitely no pork. Saskia reminded us, genocide is still happening today. " We need to have more empathy". David Wheadon thanked Saskia on behalf of members and summed up her presentation very well. Matamata certainly has produced a lot of good Kiwi's.

Concert by the Lake Committee. To date, unable to confirm a top artiste and not for the want of trying. Concert committee willing to hear of any idea's for consideration for a suitable draw card, for a concert to be considered a viable proposition to promote this Rotary term.
Members should have received their invitation to Interact Club launch. Good support for this launch from Rotarians is requested, to support these young people. Sunday 27th August 2pm, at the Fire Station. Members are asked to bring a plate and attend to afternoon tea duties ,so Interact members are free to mix and mingle with dignitaries and guests.

Interact Book Drive Saturday 2 September 10am - 2pm at Matamata Primary School. Primary age group books will be sent to our Pacific Island neighbours. Adult age group books will be available for sale and purchase.
As from next Bulletin, there will be an extra duty assigned. That will be for washing/drying/putting away our wine glasses at the conclusion of our Rotary Meetings. This duty will be reviewed after the St.John proposed kitchen upgrade. No problem for members to organise a proxy person if unable to fulfil a gazetted duty.

Dani along with three other ladies, were being driven to Auckland last week by David Hulme. The weather was not too good,with plenty of wind. David pictured with Dani at a previous Rotary meeting. David highlighted to us all, that Dani was the only lady who did not tell him how to drive his vehicle.

Mark Lewis and his wife Deanna. Mark spoke on his goal of representing the 'Deaf Blacks', on a three test match tour of England shortly. They are both looking for support to partake in that rugby tour. Which has to be self funded.
