Michelle welcomed guests including, Natalie van der Goes, Lorna Moore, Tony Lawes, Andrew Dobbe, Alice Clothier, Craig Marshall and NZ Prison Service drug detection officer Maurice O'Connor with his team canine, Radar. Michelle commented on being nearly one year in as President, loving the role. Whether would want to do it again is another question, as it is quite nice sitting and chatting with fellow Rotary peers than conducting the meetings. Quoted from the Rotarian, that the disease Measles that should have been consigned to the history books, is showing up in NZ and world wide and the contagious disease is trending upwards. Michelle is convinced the Rotary Polio eradication template, could be the most appropriate concept to eradicate Measles as well. mentioned the prerequisites to gain a RI John F. Germ Presidential Citation. One requirement is a bequeath donation to RI from at least one member of Rotary Matamata. Extremely confidential situation, so any member can contact in private Michelle, if they are considering to put a codicil to that effect In their Will.

Maurice O’Connor- Drug Detection Officer. NZ prison Service. Guest Speaker.
Members and guests were not only presented with facts of his job in an entertaining yet disciplined intelligent manner, but a dedicated team member with his canine partner, Radar. Dog and handler are considered a team unit, within the NZ Prison Service. Dogs do not discriminate, whether you are a patched gang member or a member of the clergy. Training of canines have changed from the Active Dog to Sniff and Sit Dog. The former, is scratch, bite and paw that we can all imagine. But the move to sniff and sit, is too preserve a situation for evidential purposes. Springer Spaniels and other hunting stock are considered to be most suitable to train , from birth to active duty now having a 80% success rate from well bred litters to attain operational status. Dogs are retired at about 8 years of age, and are well cared for in retirement. Not only can these operational canines detect the scent of many illitcit drugs, but weapons,mobile phones and cash. Maurice indicated they train dogs to identify more than $20,000 dollars cash notes secreted and attached to people money laundering, especially through our ports of entry and exit. Maurice first served in the military, and had a passion for dog showing, which made it a logical choice to became a handler and canine drug detection unit. Maurice and Radar gave us a real time demonstration on incredible detection skill of Radar.

Radar was brought into the room, and like the trace of drug scent on David Hulme, found every secreted target. Impressive !

Although canine training is based on play and reward, in this case a red ball. It was easy to see that there was a good bond between Radar and Maurice. A good team.
Well Well!! Seems Dani likes fishing for trout!! ......A weekend away with the Peter Vossen Family to Tarawera, seems to have had nice weather as well. Also Dani is pictured sitting next to Richard Metcalfe at our last meeting. Each meeting, a member is rostered to be Dani’s meeting host, so by the time her stay with us sadly comes to an end; she will have interfaced with all Matamata Rotarians who make her Rotary exchange possible.

También Dani está sentado sentado junto a Richard Metcalfe en nuestra última reunión. Cada reunión, un miembro se coloca para ser anfitrión de la reunión de Dani, así que para el momento su estancia con nosotros tristemente llega a su fin; Ella habrá interactuado con todos los rotarios de Matamata que hacen posible su intercambio rotario.
Ross Bay, Dracula well into final dress rehearsals. The young cast have just been wired up for sound, to which Rotary Matamata supported that by a $500 donation.

Michelle presents a cheque for $1400 to Matamata Citizens Advice Bureau volunteers,Linda Hodge and Jeff Knobes.
Affiliated to Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand, CAB can help members of our community on many issues and in 22 languages. Main issue is accommodation and affordable housing. Our donation will help with an online Matamata volunteers roster development, which will make their commitment to help others more efficient.

Our guest speaker was as informative as his entertaining delivery of commentary, that was equalled by a general comment from the lectern, by President Michelle " I see he hasn't been neutered then? " which Maurice immediately looked down towards his plumbing arrangements !! A good club intellectual content humorous meeting.
Some huge numbers quoted by President Michelle on the rise of measles worldwide. In the decade of the 1990's, a Primary School board of Trustee for 9 of those years. New Zealand gave away a National Health perspective, for freedom of choice on whether parent/caregivers vaccinate their children for a spectrum of deadly or severe consequential common diseases. As a BoT , was restricted under the Privacy Act of 1993, of families with un MMR vaccinated children attending school. Those "kids" are now men and women, and potential carriers of such disease as Measles, with a recent outbreak in Auckland to substantiate that. You should ask Margaret, about girls who had not been vaccinated for Rubella, she nursed the consequence of that.
