Volume 79 - No 26
25 March 2025
President Wade and his team for 2024/25
Wade welcomed all and asked Michelle to give an introduction for our latest inductee, Jackie Robinson. Although Jackie resigned from Rotary 6 months ago and is based in Taupo, she is still passionate and keen and so Michelle easily persuaded her to rejoin and what a great Club she picked. Jackie is a self-employed architect, between work commitments and the distance, she will not attend every meeting, but will support and contribute to Rotary and our Club/community in other ways. Great that the Club and Jackie have found a mutually suitable arrangement. Wade then completed the formalities and we welcomed the latest Rotarian into our midst.
Members Announcements
GWCTD (guess who's coming...) is scheduled for Friday April 11th, unfortunately as poor David H is incapacitated the shunt sheet will not be going around. He has emailed asking for all interested to email him directly..
Miranda offered on behalf of Rural Support free tickets to hear Sir John Kirwan speak in Putaruru 30th April. He is an amazing speaker if you haven't heard him... you should!
Both Lianne and Stew thanked everyone for their help at the Hobbiton Halfling Marathon last Saturday. There is a feedback form (emailed) which ideally should be completed as it also includes how many hours we contributed.

Maz thanked Eric, David P, Jane, Sue and Roisin for helping weed along Stanley walkway and some of the dog park.
David W advised the Festival of Music 24-25th May, helpers will be needed.

PARTING THOUGHT

Life is so ironic,
it takes sadness to know what happiness is,
noise to appreciate silence,
and absence to value presence.

Thank you Krisnha.
Rose Carnachan - Project Play

Lynette shared some local history. Matamata Futures is a Charitable Trust formed in 1989 to work for our local community alongside Matamata Piako District Council. One of the original Trustees Bruce Magan is still on board along with Frank Healy, Alan Candy, Shannon Crawford, Rose Carnachan, Adrian Joe and our own Lynette Stanley (side note, her father - Rotarian Don Stanley - was Mayor in 1989)  This project is now the second biggest since it's inception, the first being the indoor sports stadium being built shortly, this too will be of immense value to Matamata and outlying areas.

Rose advised the cost to build the playground is in the vicinity of $2.7m - $3m, with MPDC contributing $1.5m. So far the committee has raised through various events, donations and pledges (cash, goods and services) $900k, with another $300k - $600k to be found. They still have more activities planned and Milestone Homes are currently building a beautiful house which once sold, the profits (proceeds less the cost to build) will go to the playground, many of the contractors are prepared to donate their time for the cause.

Fenced toddler area with swings, slides, tunnels and much more.

The plan is in action and there has been substantial progress in fundraising  and getting support.
They aim for the playground to be ready for next summer.

David P thanked Rose on behalf of Rotary for not only her presentation but for the time and effort she has put into this, also acknowledging the same to Lynette. Wade then confirmed the Board had approved a donation, but was still in process of finalising the amount.

If you cannot attend your duties, please arrange for a replacement. Thank you.
