Hi everyone.
.....And then there were two.... only two more Rotary evenings to go for 2023, Christmas message on the 5th and then the Christmas party on the 12th. Come along and have some fun.
Local lad Max Tarrant, (Hamilton Boys High School prefect) spoke to the club about his Walsh Flying School scholarship. He was very excited about the opportunity to learn to fly but the cost was a bit daunting so getting the scholarship and subsequent funds was gratefully received. He will come back once he has graduated.
Our guest speakers for this evening were David White and Mel Goodwin.
David White was supporting our speaker Mel Goodwin. He took the opportunity to thank Rotary again for his PHF. He's been travelling around NZ for 14 years now with his message, so was thrilled to have Mel doing something similar but from a different perspective.
Mel Goodwin, mother of three boys, had a 26 year career in teaching. But she could see that there was a need for personal safety education specifically for young girls and so she began a course which has been taught in 78 Waikato schools so far. However, the majority of the schools have expressed the need for a similar programme for boys.
As a result "Mana for Life" was created - a course aimed to develop a confidence in problem solving, self-awareness, resilience building, personal safety, and life skills for all genders.
This course is designed to combat the stresses that today's youth face.
Breakdown of traditional families, unhealthy masculine and feminine stereotypes, poor diet, peer pressure relating to alcohol and drugs, lack of positive role-models, self-esteem and communication and anger management skills. They also have negative influences from the music and movie industries, online gaming and cyber harm.
Mel is looking to get financial assistance as she is wanting to take this course throughout NZ, and needs more staff and facilitators.
Robert Stuart thanked Mel, and gave her a certificate and pen. She was very chuffed with the donation on her behalf to End Polio Now.

Rotary Christmas Party on 12th December 5.30pm
At the Matamata Musical Theatre (no show, just using the venue).
Cost is $37.50 per person. Members that pay for a meal already will only pay $11.50.
