Well I do believe that we were one of the most privileged clubs in New Zealand last week, thanks to David Hulme's organising, with a visit to our fair town by the Rotary International World President Gordon McInally and his lovely wife Heather. Although it was a flying visit, we as a club consider it an absolute honor to have had them visit, along with District 9930 Governor Bill Robinson and his wife Deb. Gordon said that as a dog lover and avid gardener, he enjoyed the opportunity to see the great work that Matamata Rotary had done in creating the Memorial Grove, the Stanley Walkway and now the adjoining Dog Park.
Jane thanked Gordon and Bill for coming to Matamata and reiterated what a great organization Rotary is and how we can all "Do good in the World". It was a great honor for us to host them and we turned on a beautiful but chilly day, with a great number of members turning out to see the dog park officially opened. Gordon with the help of President Jane, also planted a tree in the Memorial Grove to commemorate his visit to Matamata, New Zealand.
Peter Vossen gave us all an overview of the project and stated that if someone had told him that the World President would be opening the Dog Park he would have said ÿeah right and the Lochness Monster is alive and well".
Peter thanked President Jane for being a great leader and driving force throughout the project and thanked all of the trades people, club members and others who had contributed throughout the project and helped make it happen.
Mayor Adrienne Wilcock was also in attendance and thanked Rotary for their dedication to the town and the many great projects that we have been involved in.
Mayor Adrienne, ably assisted by Councilors Sue Whiting, James Sainsbury, Kevin Tappin and Caleb Ansell, plant three trees in the dog park.
The greatest surprise of all I think, went to Peter Vossen. Peter has been the driving force for quite some time in getting the Dog Park from start to completion. And as such, on the opening day, was awarded a Paul Harris Sapphire Pin, with World President Gordon McInally presenting him with the pin.
