President David welcomed us to the meeting with the news that he was suffering a little from a cold following a week of deer stalking in the bush – apparantly after looking for rain for so many weeks it came when he was out in the elements! David also welcomed Peter Thissen’s uncle Peter from Australia to the club for the last time this trip and wished him a safe journey home.
Farm Watch: Is a non-event this week. It is very much the same old, same old. There was 19mm of rainfall on Monday which was positive but the moisture deficiency index is still showing a 47mm deficit. The season is pretty much over. Some stats from the Dairy Sector to June 2018 – there are 11,590 herds in NZ with an average herd size of 431 cows. There are almost 5 million cows in NZ, 48 per cent are cross breeds. 82 per cent of feed for NZ cows is grass. The industry is worth $16.7 billion in revenue and NZ produces 3% of the world’s milk production.

        ANZAC DAY 'LEST WE FORGET"
We were entertained by Marissa and Emmerson as the Lion and the Mad Hatter (just a taste of what in is store for those going to Matamata Musical Theatre’s production of Alice and Dorothy on Monday June 6.
Our very own Ross Bay gave us a history of the theatre in town. The Musical Theatre was founded in 1966 with its first production of Oklahoma selling out four nights (more than 2200 people attended those nights).
This gave great momentum moving forward for nine years of shows in the Memorial Centre before the theatre moved to its current home in Kea Street. Larger productions were still held in the Memorial Centre but rising costs saw all shows moved to Kea Street in the 1980s.
Some of the biggest shows performed here have been Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph (both of which starred the legendary Rob Guest in the lead roles.
Shows like Oklahoma, Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, The King and I and Annie Get Your Gun have had two performances in the last 53 years.
Children have always been a part of the theatre family and are the life blood of the future success of the local musical theatre scene. There is a deliberate policy of performing a children-focussed show every second year and this time around it is Alice and Dorothy.
Alice of Wonderland and Dorothy from Wizard of Oz find themselves stranded in a strange land of nursery rhymes and fairy tales where the King and Queen of Hearts challenge them to a dangerous task of finding who has been taking all the food supply of Wonderland. Through twists and turns will they find their way home or will the Wicked Witch get them first – come along to find out.
Ross outlined some of the costs involved with putting on a show of this size, including copyright and musical copyright, equipment and lighting.
So let’s get out and support our local youth in this latest production.

Hi everyone again, David Hulme
As discussed at meeting, we are looking to do a group booking for Matamata Musical Theatre’s show Alice and Dorothy on Monday May 6. Tickets cost $15 each and it would be awesome to get a big group along to support the young talent in our community. If you wish to book tickets can you please email me with how many you would like prior to close of business on this coming Monday April 29 so we can let the theatre know our commitment. Show starts at 7pm.
