David presented some insights on his two week 'Vet Safari' to Cinsta, near East London. He thanked our club for helping him to actually embark on this trip. It was certainly a learning experience for this 3rd Year Massey veterinary Science Student. The main three parts of this 'Vet Safari Course 2016' to South Africa were:1. Small Animals,2. Production animals,3.Wild life. His small animal exposure under the tutelage of qualified veterinarians from the UK, was in settlements that are still in place from the apartheid era. Canine as pets are very few and far between, all dogs he helped with were guard and hunting type, with the temperament that goes with that!! He had to be careful not to offend locals, but some of the animal husbandry was less than desirable from expected NZ standards, main treatment issues were with dogs infested with worms and other parasites. Production animals were poultry, equine and bovine specie. Main issue for ruminants were ticks, horses generally showed nourishment issues and open sores. He showed a photo of chickens pecking off ticks attached to a bovine animal. He noticed a lot of animal housing and domestic dwellings main construction material, was a cow dung mixture. His wild life experience included an eventual capture of a Zebra for treatment, and general wild life involved with a tourist game park . He learnt  that drugs used by vets need huge respect, due to the potency of some drugs that have to be used in that environment. Plus a 'pet' Giraffe that was entertaining to actually apply a pour on treatment, with has to be applied along the back of an animal. Prior to his return, a volleyball and social get together with other volunteer groups with different skill sets, who were also helping to make a difference. NZ won the volleyball, but not the 'spit the pip' , which apparently is a South African social sport!!!!
