Tonight's format was set up as a panel with Janelle as host. Each panellist was given the opportunity to explain why they had joined Rotary, what they got out of it and any other factors that were important to them. Eli Foubert, our International exchange student from Belgium, was extremely grateful for this opportunity to immerse herself in NZ culture and all the experiences she had from living here. Lianne, had attended RYLA and this experience gave her much needed confidence in herself and abilities. She joined Rotary not long after and we have all seen her growth since. Peter had participated in a Rotary Group Study Exchange, which he benefited greatly from, he believes this should be brought back. Roisin has been living in Matamata for over 10 years and wanted the opportunity to do volunteer work so she could help out in the community. Rotary is good for her as she can do what she can and when she can to fit in her busy work as a vet. Michelle then spoke of the wonderful moments she has had along her Rotary journey, being a part of the worldwide initiative End Polio Now has taken her to Pakistan among other countries and given her so many memories and connections and friends. Janelle then told of how with her children now being old enough to fend for themselves she still wanted to be helpful so now could focus more on her hometown. A recurring theme voiced by all panellists was how the friendships made, skills learned, confidence and opportunities to try things were invaluable.
