Lincoln students hosting was a great success from a club perspective, as we hosted the two echelons of students from within our own resources; plus support from Inner Wheel. Read from Rotary from Down Under magazine, the Tribute to the untimely passing of Rotary International President elect, Sam Owori. Many Rotarians across Australasia had met with the quietly spoken, twinkly eyed and strong ethical persona Rotarian. Quite rightly earning his East African informal title, ’Mr Rotary”. For his efforts to rebuild Rotary in Uganda after the devastation caused by the dictatorship of Idi Amin. He also worked hard to grow Rotary in East Africa.

David White, a very well known champion, against family violence. Has been on TV, in the media, lobbying in Wellington on that issue and author of Family Violence--Lifting New Zealand's Dark Cloud. He described how he got so passionately involved to highlight family violence, which was due to the abuse his daughter Helen was subject too by her husband. To his dismay, what steps and advice he thought was prudent and sound to help his daughter, in hindsight was wrong. Those mistakes alone set him on his drive to highlight family violence in its many manifestations, to help victims realise that there is secure help that is the appropriate way to get away from such situations. His work in family violence had not gone un noticed. Led TV presentations, created media interest, results of his endeavours are acknowledged by parliamentarians. Guest speaker appointments and presentations to inmates of NZ prisons. He straight talks on the issue that took the life of his daughter. How family violence means family harm. Abuse starts out with small things, cohesive control that inevitably leads to serious scenarios. How 26% of family violence victims are sexually violated children, 20% girls, 6% boys. How NZ has a growing statistic of grandparental families, that take in violated victims, 45% due to family split, a staggering 48% due entirely to methamphetamine. 'Suits' not patched gang members seem to be the major purveyor's of that drug to 'middle class' community. 7% are due to alcohol and other causes. Kids being put into tumbler driers, multi stabbing and gun shots to head and neck are some ways innocent children IN New Zealand have died through family violence. But he has evidence of attitude change is possible. He suggests that "we don't listen LOUD enough" to situations in our own neighbourhood. A respected lady General Practitioner, who went home every night to abuse!! A third of all woman in NZ will sometime in their lives, be subjected to abuse. He noted some evidence of lack of self esteem of young men, abuse their partners beczuse of stree, frustration and not meeting their goals. He mentioned some employers have helped , if they were made aware of a situation. So, soul destroying for parents and victims, some good does come out of tragedy. Bridge Club offered their car park for our use for Rotary Meetings at St John hall. So that the road intersection is not congested with parked cars, when no room left at St John car park members use. So please use the offer to park your vehicles at the Bridge Club.
Interact launch was a success. 60+ attended. Now into their first project, a book drive. There are banana boxes suitably identified at business houses around Matamata, for people to donate their books. Interact would prefer children aged books, as they will be passed on to appropriate recipients. Adult books will be able to be purchased, at Matamata Primary School, this Saturday 2nd September between 10am and 2 pm. No problem taking books to the primary school sat morning.
Update on our Lynette Stanley, Don says improving very quickly, but the twinkle in the eyes only fathers can see; is not quite there yet. We look forward to see Lynette back asp. As hospitals do a great social vital need, but from experience are not the ideal place for a bit of R&R.
Concert by the lake committee, will have a full meeting this Thursday night. They have an artiste that is available, but need to discuss whether they can build an afternoon's entertainment package within a realistic budget around that artiste.
Starfish are now able to clean out the previous room chattels of the former Rawhiti Rest Home, Gordon terrace. Help requested for this Thursday 9am at the Rest Home to move those room chattels into storage. Then work can commence on some internal reconfiguration. Also scheduled for 16th September, pruning trees and vegetation removal. For the Resourse Consent, requires a 1.8 m high fence has to be erected around the Rawhiti complex. A car park has also to be implemented

Rotary Matamata NZ & Children of the Forest
Thailand-Final Report 2017 saw an increase in the number of young children being accepted into the Children of the Forest child protection residential centre.
11 children came into the home for the following main reasons:
•Physical or sexual abuse by parents or caregivers
•Substance abuse or mental illness on the part of parents or caregivers
•Parent/s in prison and no other caregivers are available
•Children who become unwanted or rejected due to new marriages by single parents
•Children who are orphaned or abandoned by parents
•Children at high risk of being exploited, sold or trafficked Situation
>The increase in numbers has affected in particular COF’s home for its youngest children.
>In 2016 that home had 11 children between 1 year and 7 years but today we have 16 children.
The total number of children in full time residential care is 114.
For this reason we decided that the best use of the 3,000 NZD (72,000 THB) donated by Rotary, Matamata in 2017 was to upgrade the young children’s accommodation. In particular to create more sleeping space, larger dining capacity and an attractive play area.
