Parting Thought
By Lyn Dobbe
“One minute of anger weakens the immune system for 4-5 hours…. however one minute of laughter boosts the immune system for 24 hours!!”
Our 2021-22 Board of Directors
Tonight’s meeting was started off by Corporal Murray. The Club had a few guests as they were keen to hear this week’s speaker.

President Presents...
13th July is International French Fries day. Robert informed us how they came to be and why they were called that.
He reminded of Te Aroha club's invite to their annual Auction fundraiser, Wednesday 25th August. This is usually well attended by Matamata and is deemed a worthy visit if just for the catering!
District Governor Ross Pinkham will be visiting us on September 28th. He is a keen cyclist so Robert has asked for styling ideas for that night’s dinner. The word Lycra was bandied about…. gulp!
A reminder there will not be a meeting 20th July but there will be two the following week, with the AGM on the 27th (please note this will be a mid-winter Christmas dinner) and Cambridge club meeting 5.30pm at Pepper Street Café including a tour of Swaps Thursday 29th. (Shunt sheet David H - cost $20)

Members Announcements
Peter V: Lincoln students visit. Our members are asked to billet them, usually for two nights however this time is just 30th August. A shunt sheet will go out soon. This is a great fundraiser for us, and it is generally very entertaining.

Michelle visited Henry in Hospice. Sorting his pain control but in good spirits otherwise. As always our thoughts are with him.

Maz read email update for ROMAC. Australian and NZ governments have maintained their policies of not allowing ROMAC to bring patients into our countries even though there is a large list of prospective medical cases needing treatment. Due to COVID-19 restrictions there has been a large drop in revenue normally fundraised. They have asked all Clubs for donations to help them in this instance.

Maz and Bronwyn Byers are the Rotary/Waikato Rural Support Trust liaison.

Guest Speaker
Krishna Narayanasami introduced tonight’s speaker Prasanna Nara. He was the perfect choice for this as she is dating his son. Her topic was Ethical Consumption.
Prasanna works for the Not-for-profit organisation Fair and Good.
They are an online Directory for ethical shopping. She asked the question “do you know where all the items you consume or wear come from?” Nobody raised their hand. This is an accurate indication of what is happening in the world and with modern day slavery with over 40 million victims (majority being child labour) if we continue to support these unethical companies we as consumers are in effect voting with our money, and saying this is okay. By changing the way we shop we can change the world! There are some steps you can take, firstly by educating yourself by checking Brands whether on their label or certification or by going online. If they are ethical, environmentally friendly or organic they will be transparent and proudly display this information. If you search online type in the Brand name + sustainability or ethical or labour if there is anything good or bad this should show up. The Fair and Good online Directory www.fairandgood.co.nz  has many companies already listed so this is a great place to go to for information. They acknowledge it is not a complete list and invite people to share if they know of others that could be added. There is stringent testing to ensure that everyone in their Directory meets their exacting standards.
Prasanna said she is aware that not everyone would be able to afford to immediately only shop ethically as there were often higher costs involved but generally consumers overbought items so if that was addressed then the same amount of income could be spent but in a much better way.
She concluded with the saying “strive for progress not perfection” as perfection focuses on flaws and creates anxiety whilst progress can be achieved with small steps.

Maz thanked Prasanna for her time and dedication to an extremely worthy cause.
