Parting Thought
A quote that Brian Hunter acquired over the years...

"There is nothing more short lived than a tidy garage"

Our 2021-22 Board of Directors

The decision to hold another Zoom meeting was made and this time we had a great turnout with 31 members on the call. David P had work colleague Kylie in attendance too.

President Presents...

On this day
October 12
1823 Charles Macintosh of Scotland begins selling raincoats (Macs)
In 1853 John Morrissey wins boxing title, when Yankee Sullivan leaves the ring after 36th round to slug Morrissey's fans.
Also in 1899 South Africa Boer Republic declares war on Britain.

Last Sunday a sneaky symposium was set for Sandra Hunter to receive her sixth Paul Harris Fellow, this means she is now a recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow Ruby pin. This shindig was attended by husband Brian, David and Lisette, Leonie and Lindsay, Bryce and Sonia and President Robert. Brian had to tell a couple of porkies to get Sandra across to the neighbours to ensure they were there on time.... apparently he paid for this later!

Robert gave an update on a couple of our members: Owen Farmilo took on a steer and unfortunately came off second best. He was knocked unconscious and has massive bruising but it was close to being a whole lot worse! Richard Metcalfe has had stents put in, and was looking the picture of health.

Michelle advised Interact quiz fundraiser postponed till at least 2022 term 1 as they need us to be at level one for this to proceed.

Peter V gave update on dog park. Submissions have now been closed. During the week a post was put on Facebook asking why only Peria Road was being considered as they believed Swap Park to be the superior choice? They put up a poll and there were more votes for Swap Park. Submissions for this option were made earlier this year but Council upon further research felt not best option so looked at other alternatives. Peter not sure what this now means for Council but will keep in contact.

Guest Speaker: Dr Jacqueline Rowarth - Thoughts on Regenerative Agriculture

Unfortunately due to some technical issues David Johnson was going to introduce our speaker but Jacqui stepped up and got straight into it.

Originally from England Jacqui has settled in NZ and farms with her partner. She has a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Science with honours in Environmental Agriculture, and a PhD in Soil Science from Massey University, and is deemed to be one of the leading soil scientists in NZ. In October 2016 she left her role as Professor of Agribusiness at the University of Waikato, to take on the position as Chief Scientist for the EPA, she resigned after 16 months but continues to teach and write.

Jacqui believes regenerative farming can be good for the individual farm but feels on a systematic level it simply would not work in NZ. There is either a lot of misunderstanding or just lack of knowledge around this subject. There is an expectation that regenerative farming systems will improve the profitability of farming while leaving a smaller environmental footprint. A report from AgResearch released this year shows NZ with the smallest carbon footprint of milk production. There are many options of farming available: biodynamic, organic, ecological, conventional as well as regenerative. She went on to say the Illusory Truth Effect or "Snark Syndrome"* is allowing people to blame poor nutrient density on farming practices rather than their personal food choices.

Merv King thanked Jacki for her presentation. He felt her talk was very appropriate as there are many farmers (current and ex) who would have benefitted by what she had to say.

Note from the Editor:

As I am a big fan of Lewis Carroll, I have pinched another of his quotes...
