Guest Speaker - Steph McLennan
Steph is in fitness industry, based in Hamilton. Her focus is now strength and balance training. ACC initiative. Steph tested us with a quiz, including is a little bit better than nothing? Some people do not like exercise. Fitness testing can include running or jumping and cardio. However, balance is another type of test, such as standing on one leg and closing eyes. Not everyone found this easy. Strength and balance is important. Under 5s fall over the most. The next group is older people. A contributor to this is eye sight and lack of sensation for older people. However, people should not be expected to be falling over. So much can be done to prevent falling over. This is why strength and balance classes are provided, with a focus on over 65s. Three public classes are available in Matamata. In-home programmes are also available. GP referral scheme. Classes are not "huff and puff". Frail people can do well. The club participated in exercise demonstrations. Currently 12,000 people in Waikato attending strength and balance classes. Waikato target is 22,000. Steph is talking to Rotary so we can spread the word regarding this initiative.
