Michelle had just travelled back in time from Whakatane, to preside over her club. Michelle made reference to the earthquake, especially around the top east of the South Island. That Rotary District 9970, has initiated a Rotary earthquake appeal. Michelle took leave of members, in asking if the sergeants fine contributions could be deposited to that appeal. Members suggested the sergeants box go around a second time for all members to have an opportunity to donate. Agreed. Through directors committee meetings , club members have agreed to continue the sponsorship support of the St Judes school bus. The funds that were sent as our contribution of support to the school in Juan, Pakistan has gone on a tiki tour. We know our funds have been sent on its way, but have not arrived where should have been received. Work in progress on that. Michelle acknowledged our guest speakers.

Merv introduced two creative ladies indeed, who had just prior decorated part of the Tainui room with various arts including some works from Richard M. and Merv K. In the 1950's 4 ladies including Dorothy Venables and Ida Carey, made the effort to form the Arts Society was incorporated in 1954.Membership just grew so well that the Society were able to put on their first public exhibition in 1955. Jim Cotter and Jim Ayers are linked to the success of that exhibition. Art Societies were forming at a respectable rate , that in 1960 the Matamata Society of Arts joined the 'The Bay Association of Clubs'. They then got involved in schools, to help youth experience the art scene. The Matamata Society also took the opportunity to relocate a former dairy company homestead to Firth Tower., which is now a splendid HQ for Matamata Society of Arts.-This was also the catalyst to attract people interested in other forms of the art dimension such as pottery, fabrics and recycled items. Their 60 year anniversary saw the society with a very healthy talented membership, Matamata folk that create things from nothing is clearly remarkable. There is a lot of talent in our district.

The Society holds workshops and also hosts visiting artists. With 50 financial members, their club meetings are the 3rd Monday of the Month at the Homestead, 7pm start. All welcome.
Lachie D. summation when thanking them both for their presentation and for the display of some of the art produced by their members, was right on the mark with his comment "We are in awe of the skill you embrace".

Saturday the 19th November the Building Unity through Safer Communities (BUSC) group is holding a Walk to show support against family violence in our community . The walk takes place on Waharoa road east road from approx. New World to Pohlen Road , a distance of 3 km return trip. Brian Hunter is looking for Volunteer Marshalls to keep watch on the walkers and make sure none stray onto the Railway line during the walk. The Marshalls need to be there for a safety briefing at 9,45 am, and the event is over at mid day (unless you want to stay and help pack down the event for the next hour)Brian is looking for 6 Rotarians in Rotary vests to join the 6 volunteers from the Community watch group to make this team complete. Please get back to me if you are able to assist on the day. Date – Saturday 19thNov. Time – briefing 9.45am. Marshalling 10 am – 12 mid day. Where – Waharoa East Road. Tuesday 22ND and 29th Rotary meetings, are the collection nights for members contribution of non perishable food towards Matamata Food Bank. Mike Farrell and Peter Vossen contacts for this donation of food products. A suggested food list was given out to members.
Public Image Committee are organising a Float for the Christmas Parade. Theme is going to be based on Concert by the lake. More info later.
Kevin Sing, John Fernyhough were taken for a fact finding tour of Southland by Owen Westlake. Viewed the Winton Rotary Clubs' endeavour with their 7km , 4 year project walkway around Winton.

Member of Rotary 47years.Positive Rotary Moment was as leader of the 1988 Group Study Exchange, to District 109 of the UK. Geographically an area London, Oxford and Stratford upon Avon. He led a team of 5 ladies. They were afforded some privileged visits to Royal Crown assets, the lab where they had just de coded DNA, Harrisons Security Printers where they print money and postage stamps, bonds etc. Halwell Atomic Facility, where they saw 2 plus years submersed spent rods in refrigerated water still glowing blue!! Created a lot of friendships and paid for a lot of air miles since then.
Moustaches gentlemen to be judged 29th November. I understand no Brazilians in the judging team...........vivid mind games for a few of you I am sure on that sentence !!!! but undoubtedly made you remember to gather your sponsorship for a hopefully rewarding indicative $$$$ figure, for this goodwill fund raiser.
Glenda was on a roll as sergeant at our meeting. Fine Job one could say!!!!
Don't forget your food bank contributions next meeting 22nd or 29th Rotary meet.
Fred Barrett advised that a Rotary Group Study group from Ladner , Canada. We are preferred hosts next Year. Dates presented are 20th to 23rd March, attend our meeting on Tuesday 21st. 4 couples and 1 single. Contact Fred if your are able to host our fellow Rotarians from Ladner. More accurate info to confirm timetable and contingent names with possibly an indicative idea of what they wish to accomplish during their stay with us, will be forthcoming. (Ladner was created as a fishing village on the banks of the Fraser River. It is a part of the Municipality of Delta, British Columbia, Canada, and a suburb of Vancouver)
