Michelle Tanner gave us an update on Te Aroha Rotarian Tom Stephenson after visiting him on the weekend. Tom is moving around the house but has trouble speaking. He is happy to be home but has a long way to go. After his stroke there have been more health issues so please keep him in your thoughts.

We are planning to re-establish our somewhat neglected connection with our sister club the Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Richmond in District 9640 near Brisbane. Barry McKey was always passionate about them! You may recall we sent a contribution to them after members were affected by floods a few years ago. And MANY years ago we had exchange visits with them. They currently are home club of their District Governor Dave (and Robyn) Harmon and are leading a Zone 8 domestic violence prevention project ‘Rotary says NO to domestic violence’. Our District Governor Bill Robinson may even talk about this on his DG visit. Expect to hear a lot more about them this year."

Maz gave an update on Cure Kids Red Nose day last Friday. She thanked everyone profusely who helped on the day, whether they were delivering or on the street selling and of course the many members (and more often their spouses) who baked nearly 600 cupcakes.  Of which at least half were pre-sold to local businesses. Special thanks go to President Jane for emailing businesses and "selling" them morning tea that they didn't know they wanted. A comment was heard that she could sell to ice eskimos!

 

 

Thanks also to Graeme Guilford and Miranda Thomson for providing tables etc. for the stall outside their businesses. Paperplus was the best spot to be on a cold winter morning as they enjoyed basking in the sunshine.

 

Peter Vossen offered the use of his office as drop off point. Great work Sue Whiting, Jane Belton, Maz McIvor and Peter Vossen for sorting and packing the preordered sales into boxes. 

 

 

Krishna Narayanasami generously donated 50 cupcakes and asked if they could go to worthy recipients. They were delivered to the staff at Pohlen Hospital and Matamata Medical Centre for their morning tea on his behalf. Country Lodge staff were thrilled when Jane Belton  dropped off some to them as well, which she'd kindly donated.

 

It was Job's turn to reveal who this week's Mystery Rotarian is. Wife Dora suggested he phone people, but Job decided he could work it out himself and use his gut feeling.

He thought clue one “I represented Australasia at a Convention in Tokyo" was a trick question, clue three “I have officiated a sports event between Australia and New Zealand” could be any sport... chess for example. So opted to concentrate on clue 2 “I studied senior management at the Australasian Institute of Police Management”.  Job thought it was a female member, one who was dynamite, his gut was telling him so. To add drama he had the name on a folded piece of paper, which Merv was then asked to read out . He had incorrectly guessed Sue Whiting...so had to pay a fine. The Mystery Rotarian was asked to stand... we were all a bit surprised when Brian Hunter did, but quickly realised the questions probably related to his years in the Fire Brigade.
