President Alice Albright has now completed the task of planting a tree in the Stanley Lane Walkway, commemorating the Coronation of King Charles. Pop down and check it out when the weather permits.
Michelle Tanner announced that Matamata Interact Chair Priya Potts is now a United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Ambassador. Priya is Matamata College Head girl, and heads off to Wellington for advanced training that also includes learning media skills.
Catch up with past President Robert Stuart in regard to the monthly coffee morning.If you are interested in going, please contact Robert on 0274 888 167 as he needs to give the Cafe an idea of numbers. Next date to be advised.
Matamata Festival of Music on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May, was a resounding success. David Wheadon had 14 Rotarians help with Matamata Festival of Music with 16 different category of bands participated over two days. A most successful Music Festival at Matamata Intermediate. Very wet conditions prevented car parking on School playing grounds. SO who can fill up every available parking space on Smith Street.......Rotary Matamata CAN. Sunday saw cars parked both sides of the Smith Street north and south of the School entrance. So many thanks to all who were able to help out.

Apple Pie Night has now been changed to an Evening with Tom Sainsbury. The date has now been changed to the 5th October with proceeds to Pohlen Hospital. More information closer to time.
Our Sheriff for 2023-2024 David Hulme, standing in for Murray Wills. " Confessions are good for the soul" !!! David quoted as he intently added names to his book.

President Alice Albright chose the Rotary Club of Oban Scotland to highlight this meeting. They currently have 50 members and were charterd on the 25th November 1949. Their community activities include a Reindeer Parade, Plastic sponsored Duck races down a stream to the sea as a fund raiser.. ( all ducks are retrieved ). Young Carers support, those who look after aged members of family. Very Youth focussed in support of their young people endeavours . Plus a Christmas Dinner with the Guest in Red, for elderly folk.
Our speaker for this evening was Anne Clothier, Alice's mum, speaking to us about her life on the Isle of Mull.

The Isle of Mull is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides and lies off the west coast of Scotland. The population is 2800 and the locals are known as Mullochs. They have a lot of thriving industry, including; farming, fishing, forestry, and tourism. When it comes to the weather, one thing was clear! It rains Jan, Feb, Mar, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec.
Anne headed over to the UK in 2016 for a friend’s wedding. Being in between jobs at the time, she figured if she finds a job she might just stay on. Luckily President Alice and sister Zoe headed over in 2017 to explore with mum too. Although Alice had to head back to start work, Zoe stayed on and together they applied for a job on the Isle of Mull working at Duart Castle.
They arrived right in the thick of the clan gathering but were welcomed with open arms. Anne was also drawn to Scotland by the thought of meeting a Jamie from the movie Outlander.
Duart Castle is a 12th Century castle which is open for visiting during the summer months. There are a range of jobs available at Duart, from working in the retail store, to being a tour guide. They are always looking for workers so if you’d like a bit of a change, head on over!
Duart Castle had been in the Maclean family since 1367, they managed to keep their land through many fights, however in 1674 the castle was lost, not in battle, but in repayment of debts to the Campbells.
In 1910 the castle was purchased back by Sir Fitzroy Maclean (the 26th Chief) who then started the enormous task of bringing it back from the ruins. The renovations are still going on today and slowly the castle is coming back to its former glory.
While on Mull, you can enjoy a range of nature. There are beautiful walks, lots of water falls, and if you’re up for a challenge you can even walk up Ben More (a 3000ft mountain). The Island is surrounded by beautiful beaches and lovely fishing villages. When you look out your door, there is a high change of seeing highland cows, wild deer, eagles and many other animals.
So did Anne even meet herself a Jamie? Well you can see for yourself!
