Michelle was all smiles as she bought the meeting to order, as there was plenty of chatter from a lot of happy campers prior. The Rotary theme tonight was "World Polio Day". Purple Pinky Day raised $367.30. Add on Bill gates support makes that nz$1001. Sufficient to fund 1400 children vaccinations. Tonight Michelle covered another aspect of Rotary such as Polio information resources. MyRotary through Rotary.org for members, with such things as Webnars, Live stream events and links to "End Polio Now". Polio Plus is the Rotary driven programme. 'End Polio Now' is the publicity and promotional side of the programme, Polio eradication is the intended outcome of that programme. An October 19th update, indicated on a comparative synopsis, that Polio infliction is coming down; despite the hiccup of Polio resurfacing in Nigeria. Oral vaccine still being administered, with IPV being given to young children at the time they have other health enhancing vaccines.
Raewyn Kirkman, Momentum Waikato was her topic.
Raewyn Kirkman was introduced with an impressive CV by Dave W., this time not with a Rotary hat on, but as an important cog in Momentum Waikato. This Incorporated Charitable Trust covers the constituencies of Waikato district Council, Hamilton City and Matamata-Piako District Council. Simply explained as a go between manager of financial donations of people who wish to put a legacy, bequeaths or even other charitable trusts that have a succession problem for governance of the intention to that particular Trust Deed. Some donors do indicate what they would prefer their contribution to be aimed at , for the future plan ahead of a “Better Waikato” . Momentum Waikato accept proper applications for that meet several criteria, to “Plan ahead for the environment into the future”. Noticeable philanthropic giving also by family trusts to support the aims of Momentum Waikato. All donations are held in perpetuity, A governance board of seven, with the combined skill set to oversee best practice and professionalism in operational matters. At present, all board members are Hamilton based; Raewyn indicated that maybe the board should reflect the three main areas of the Charitable Trust. A small video of a couple was shown who have established an arboretum, who have donated a significant sum to Momentum Waikato with the caveat where they wish attention be made in the future. Raewyn highlighted that they can co ordinate similar donations so to manage those funds that collectively amount to considerable funds that meet donors similar criteria. Pooling generosity to enable game changing outcomes is a very practicable way of giving community help. Quote Raewyn....”We are local, independent, totally one cheque, one receipt one stop shop”. The Charitable Trust can and do draft gift plans, plus advice on how to grant and when to grant. Anonymity guaranteed to donors who request that. At the moment, the Charitable Trust currently is to manage a sizable amount of directed donations, regards the Founders Theatre. They will work with Hamilton City Council on that. Also recently several “Waikato Vital Signs” workshops have been held, one was held recently in the Memorial Hall. They will report back and come up with solutions put forward at those workshops. She concluded “ A better Waikato for everyone, for ever!”. In thanking Raewyn on behalf of members, Kevin S. suggested Raewyn and Geoff be associate members of Rotary Matamata, and therefore pay fines and meals ha ha .

Richard Metcalfe highlighted some Positive Rotary Moments, the first being very complimentary of Rob’s buttered Chicken. The social ambience at our Rotary Matamata club meetings, all the talking and laughter in engagement with fellow members is always a PRM. Richard has met many very good people in Rotary, who are positively involved in our community affairs and commerce and lead by example. Carol and he enjoyed attending World Convention 2007 in Salt Lake City, which had got transferred from New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina. He also noted the Bill Boyd led Convention, had 100 countries represented with an attendance of 17000.Bill Gates was the key note speaker. They then went to visit Bryce Canyon , the lookout was 9300 feet amsl with a view that in his opinion, surpassed Grand Canyon. A photograph of that view was passed round for members to see. What is also a very personal moment prior to going to convention, was a trip to Waiheke with a close friend, who suffered a medical event. Which would have been terminal, if he had been at 9300 feet at Bryce Canyon. We all observed the interaction of friendship with Merv as he left the lecturn.

End Polio Now Day was this week. Progress on ridding this disease world-wide is very encouraging.
Michelle leads a very strong club of "Happy Campers". The number of community inputs we have done to date and what is yet to come is very worthy of note, of members commitment.

Peter T. has been successful in getting a Cambridge roller for this Saturdays working bee. Sowing grass seed and raking it in. 9am and bring your rake. Morning tea provided.

17th November, Cambridge Rotary at the Cambridge Trots fund raising dinner.. 3 causes being supported, one of which is "Days for Girls". $75 pp. 50% of which actually goes into the distribution pool .
