Welcome to the
President Presents...
After dinner Robert advised that unfortunately our speaker had to cancel due to family emergency.
He informed us of the Cambridge Rotary President's breakfast fundraiser he attended with five others, including two Interactors. All profits went to GECAF (give every child a future). Also the Interactors had been collecting for the Foodbank and doing very well at this.
Unfortunately Harry R has had a fall, and went to hospital for an x-ray. His kids came down from Auckland prepared to take him back with them... but no he has a walking frame and is quite happy where he is!
This day in history
International day of Human Space Flight, this was dedicated to Yuri Gagarin 50 years after his first flight.
1606 Union Jack was designed by James 1 to represent his new realm.
1917 The Battle of Vimy Ridge in WW1 was considered to be a defining moment in time for Canada due to their success at reclaiming this important site whilst under constant barrage from the Germans. It had a commanding view over the Allied lines, the French and the English had both been unsuccessful but whilst Canada triumphed it came at a terrible cost with 3568 killed and 7000 wounded.
Towering 27m above the base of the monument (below), the two pylons represent Canada and France – two nations beset by war and united to fight for a common goal - peace and freedom for the Allied nations.
1945 Franklin Roosevelt died, Vice President Harry S. Truman assumed office as President.
1961 An obscure Soviet fighter pilot rode into history on this day 40 years ago, circling the planet to become the first man in space. Yuri Gagarin unfortunately died seven years later on a routine training flight, aged 34.

1955 The announcement of the polio vaccine's safety and effectiveness was made by Dr Thomas Francis, of the University of Michigan, 25 months after the creator Jonas Salk announced he had successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis.
