Our 2021-22 Board of Directors
Welcome to the

President Presents...

After dinner Robert advised that unfortunately our speaker had to cancel due to family emergency.
He informed us of the Cambridge Rotary President's breakfast fundraiser he attended with five others, including two Interactors. All profits went to GECAF (give every child a future). Also the Interactors had been collecting for the Foodbank and doing very well at this.

Unfortunately Harry R has had a fall, and went to hospital for an x-ray. His kids came down from Auckland prepared to take him back with them... but no he has a walking frame and is quite happy where he is!

This day in history

International day of Human Space Flight, this was dedicated to Yuri Gagarin 50 years after his first flight.

1606 Union Jack was designed by James 1 to represent his new realm.

1917 The Battle of Vimy Ridge in WW1 was considered to be a defining moment in time for Canada due to their success at reclaiming this important site whilst under constant barrage from the Germans. It had a commanding view over the Allied lines, the French and the English had both been unsuccessful but whilst Canada triumphed it came at a terrible cost with 3568 killed and 7000 wounded.
Towering 27m above the base of the monument (below), the two pylons represent Canada and France – two nations beset by war and united to fight for a common goal - peace and freedom for the Allied nations.

1945 Franklin Roosevelt died, Vice President Harry S. Truman assumed office as President.

1961 An obscure Soviet fighter pilot rode into history on this day 40 years ago, circling the planet to become the first man in space. Yuri Gagarin unfortunately died seven years later on a routine training flight, aged 34.

1981 Regular flights of the space shuttle began, with the launching of Colombia.

1955 The announcement of the polio vaccine's safety and effectiveness was made by Dr Thomas Francis, of the University of Michigan, 25 months after the creator Jonas Salk announced he had successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis.

Famous birthdays

1947 David Letterman
1950 David Cassidy, best known for his role in The Partridge Family. Became such a teen idol, Australia threatened to deport him due to the mass hysteria at his concerts. In a London concert nearly 800 were injured in a crush at the front, 30 went to hospital and a 14 year old died four days later.

Guest Speaker: Fiona George cancelled.... Maz McIvor on Red Cross

President Robert introduced Maz to speak in place of Fiona. She then gave an impromptu I've-just-been-thrown-in-deep-end talk about her 20 year association with Red Cross. It all began when her mother started doing meals on wheels and Maz thought that was a great way to help her community so she started as well, often taking her children in the holidays. For over a decade her mother ran the program for Red Cross with Maz heavily involved, sadly this stopped when they moved to Matamata. However about three years ago Maz started up again, taking her now partially paralysed mother to help her get out and about. Maz has since joined the crew on the Area Council and along with another couple of fellow Rotarians helps out there.
She then gave a brief history on how/why Red Cross was formed, quoting directly from Wikipedia. Red Cross is an International humanitarian movement with approximately 97m volunteers and staff worldwide. 24 June 1859 Swiss businessman Henri Dunant arrived to witness the terrible aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in which about 40,000 soldiers on both sides died or were left wounded on the field. He was horrified by the near-total lack of medical attendance, so he abandoned his business plans and took charge in organising an overwhelming level of relief assistance with local villagers to aid without discrimination.
Five years later the first Geneva Convention was adopted in which all participating countries would abide by the rules guaranteeing neutrality and protection for wounded soldiers, field medical personnel in an armed conflict. Directly following this the first national societies were founded and have evolved since then. All this came about from his original work (followed by years of driving this) and he was awarded the first ever Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.

Mike Steiner thanked Maz for stepping into the breach.

Note from the Editor:
Joke from Robert...
A retired farmer sent his dog out to count his sheep, when the dog returns, it says, "Woof! You've got forty sheep out there!" "Forty?" said the farmer. "I thought there were only thirty-eight." "Yes, that's right," said the dog. "First I counted them, and then I rounded them up!"
