Parting Thought

This is a very special one that Lynette Stanley found in the wallet of the late Don Stanley.

Three kinds of men fail to understand women-
Young Men, Old Men and Middle Aged Men.

Hi there everyone

Hope you are all enjoying todays sunshine and are bouncing around with a "spring" in your step.😊

At our meeting on Tuesday night President Alice Clothier opened the meeting by welcoming everyone in Maori, as it was Maori language week and then after a brief silence in respect of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, we all sang God Save The King. Very moving.

Alice briefed us on the work of the Rotary Club of Rotorua Sunrise, which was chartered in 1998. Although a relatively young club, they are very active and some of their main focuses are Oral Language Support for adults to help with children, The Blue Walk for Prostrate Cancer, Free Shuttle to Vaccination centers and Charity House. This is where they build a house to be auctioned with the proceeds then poured back into local charities. Fantastic work Rotorua Sunrise!

Rotary is a great and wonderful organisation. See below a photo from Leonie Tisch on their cruise.

Had an ‘on board Rotary meeting’. Don Thomas (between Lindsay & me) was in NZ few years ago on Rotary Friendship Exchange and remembers visiting White Island and meeting PDG Roger Miller!! Small world.
Have had another ‘meeting’ and now regularly have dinner with Don & his wife & couple of their friends. He‘s a Snowbird - lives winters in Arizona USA & summers in Calgary Canada.

Our Speaker for the evening was Suzanne Lawes, General Manager of the Pohlen Trust Hospital.

My apologies as I forgot to get a photo of Suzanne.

Suzanne has been the General Manager for the past 6 years and I believe does a fantastic job. She is a fully trained Registered Nurse who then went on to complete a Masters degree in Professional Practice, which has certainly stood her in good stead.
Her vision for Pohlen Hospital is -
Where Community and Health come together.

Pohlen hospital currently has 29 beds, made up of 25 dual swing beds for Aged Residential Care, long term end of life respite care and post acute convalescent care, and 4 acute primary care / GP beds. It also has a Birthing Unit with two Delivery suits and 4 post natal beds.

In 2021, Pohlen Hospital supplied 9595 Meals on Wheels, there were 82 births, 145 women in post natal care, 8076 bed days of aged care and 44 residents passed away in end of life care.

The values they hold very dear are - Respect, Teamwork, Privacy, Trust and Loyalty.

During the first Covid Outbreak, they were very lucky not to have it come into the hospital and this was due completely to their great infectious control regime.

Going forward, Suzanne and the Trust, are looking for a solution to cover a growing community with 24 hour care. This is largely hampered by the increased costs of food and consumables, the need to increase wages to attract staff and being paralyzed by a health system where they wait for Policy and procedure to help the money flow. They are hoping to start an extension in February.

Merv King thanked Suzanne and suggested that perhaps we start a "Friends of Pohlen" where people could make a monthly donation. Great idea.

Keep smiling and have a great weekend.😊
