Hi everyone.
Hope you are all having a lovely weekend. Just a bit of a follow up from last weeks newsletter. We also had the privilege of Mikayla Furness coming to speak to us that I didn't have room for in the last newsletter.
Our other speaker two weeks ago was Mikayla Furness. Mikayla is the head girl at Matamata College and had been selected to be a member of the Pacific Student Leaders Program on their trip tp Samoa from the 1st to 9th October.
Mikayla said that Samoa is a beautiful country and she is so grateful to have been able to go on this trip with the Future Leaders Academy NZ. Each day as part of their syndicate they would have 2 leaders plan the whole day. They were told what activity they would be doing but had to lead their team on when to get there and how to get there. They planted around 1000 trees at the only National Park in Samoa and participated in a beach and river clean up across the island. A highlight was a visit to the Sua Ocean Trench and cave pool.
The young leaders also had a business visit to the Lava Hotel where they learnt about their leadership management roles. They stayed in Fasito’otai Village with the most lovely hosts of the church there. Mikayla said she was also lucky enough to meet some amazing people from Australia, Samoa, and all across NZ.
She thanked everyone who helped her to fundraise and contributed to her being able to go and participate. "Without your support I would not be able to experience all the amazing memories I will never forget.
I am so grateful to be apart of a small community that supports their youth to fulfil their future aspirations."
Mikayla has since been awarded a scholarship to study Health Science at Otago University and would love to go back to Samoa in the future to give back to it's amazing people.

After the Melbourne Cup excitement on Tuesday night, we will have Bob Mc Grail (who some of you will know - ex Councillor, Deputy Mayor etc) address the club, to talk to us about a project he would like Rotary to be involved in, where we would plant some Tanekaha trees in memory of Les Parker (ex- Rotarian) behind our Kauri Grove plot on Burwood Road.
