Corporal Eric Tanner brought the meeting to order. Michelle outlined the format of the meeting, club night and discussion on club business. Welcomed guests Christine Wilson, Tony Lawes and Mike and Janette Graves. Michelle had done 5 Foundation presentations in the past week. Demonstrated the difference between the US Rotarian magazine and RDU (Rotary Down Under). The former a more commercial content publication.  Both latest issues have had environmental themes. Which is in sync with Rotary International President Elect, Ian H.S. Riseley.  (Rotary Club of Sandringham. Victoria, Australia) theme; Making a Difference. He would like to see Rotarians plant 1.2 Million trees..... one for every member of Rotary world wide.
Good to see Christine Wilson again at Rotary.

1962, Rolling Stones first performance at a London Club, the Cuban Missile Crisis and a form 2 (Yr 8) Maeroa Intermediate student prefect was called into his headmasters' office. Was told he was to receive a prize from the Frankton Junction Rotary Club. Duly attended the Rotary meeting, although a bit intimidated by the occasion in the smoke filled room. But was supported by his fathers friend, to him help through the proceedings. He received his prize and said "thank you". That was 54 years ago, and his Rotary Moment. 26 years now as a Rotarian . David still does not know what he got it for! But the book prize on aeroplanes was in very good condition, with salutation from the Rotary Club in the preface. It was passed around for members to view.
                                         
 
  • Secretary David Johnson read out letters of appreciation from an individual and groups, Rotary Matamata had supported in recent times.
  • Pat on the back for the Christmas Tree Team, $4638 profit.
  • Spud in the Bucket weigh in advertised. Mike Farrell has a 5pm 'weigh in' start.
  • Peter Thissen thanked everyone who helped put things back together, after the concert. Noted the ambience of the concert area a bit numb now , compared  to what was achieved for the concert.
  • Discussion on venue: Acoustics are a problem, especially those with hearing aids. St John do want us to be long term users of their hall. They are willing to address this issue. More technical issues, such as where the most suitable position for screen projection. The sound speaker system , has a return echo from glass windows and concrete block walls which needs to be taken into consideration. Rotary Matamata has not made a commitment to return to the rebuilt Memorial Hall, but will consider any proposals on that. 20th March is when the reconstruction company takes on the project, with an expected 9 months to complete. So we need at least a calendar year for our meetings venue.
  • Discussion on Rotary youth exchanges. There are some very positive aspects and outcomes, but we are all too very aware difficulties can and do arise. Club members indicated support in the principles of Rotary Youth Exchanges. Michelle asks that committees discuss this again at their respective March committee meetings.
  • Michelle is to visit Matamata College, to see what interest can be gauged, to start a year 12 (15 to 18 yo students) Interact club. Members voiced opinion that such an Interact Club would require good involvement of Rotary Matamata club members, and the need for a succession plan for such a club, as students do move on.

  • Top Table....Where is it??? sez Michelle. At the moment, there is really no set table plan. Next meeting will need a another reconfigure, so members are not looking into the setting sun when being addressed from the lectern.
  • Kevin Sing was mentioned in despatch for his Hygiene Officer Duties at the concert. Kevin remarked "it had its moments", especially when he interrupted a lady with her pants down !!!!!
  • Nudge the people you may have sold spud in the bucket entries. Be good if we can get a reasonable percentage participation at 'weigh in'.
  • Leonie Tisch ,Rotary International Assembly experience will be in next weeks bulletin.
