Peter welcomed guest Maureen Mansell, and acknowledged the return of Lynette Stanley after illness. Plus a Rotary Matamata Club first, Rotarian Christine Wilson now a proud Mum of a baby girl. First time in club history a member becoming a parent for the first time. Then Peter asked "when is spring in New Zealand?". Australia, South Africa and Us are the only countries to have our four seasons start on the 1st of a month. A recent poll at weatherwatch.co.nz showed only 38% believe seasons start at the 1st of the month in New Zealand, ie spring 1st September. NZ has no legislation or regulation or agency that is responsible for regulating seasons. So do we stay with this meterological start of spring ,or change to the astronomical start of spring which is September 22nd. The sun and earth's axis controls the seasons, namely the September / March equinoxes and December / July soltices. Department of Internal Affairs advise there is nothing in legislation or regulation for government in regards to an official NZ start to our four seasons. Only current legislation directs DIA to administer official daylight saving start and finish dates. Democratically, Rotary Matamata could lead community forums and debate as to our four seasons official start and finish, and then consensus information actually be presented for consideration by NZ House of Representatives. In reality, Kiwi's do not seem hung up on our current seasonal dates being out of sync with the majority of the world.

Concert by the Lake for 2018 confirmed by the Organising committee.
Concert venue sub committee chair, Peter Thissen and Ineke. There are nine sub committee's of responsibility, with one goal. A successful concert and fine weather.
Bridge Club offered their car park for our use for Rotary Meetings at St John hall. So that the road intersection is not congested with parked cars, when no room left at St John car park members use. So please use the offer to park your vehicles at the Bridge Club.
Interact did not have much foot traffic for the book drive at Matamata Primary School, last Saturday. Already and inventory of a 1000+ books, Of which children reading books have been packed for distribution to the Pacific Islands, and Michelle will take some to Pakistan shortly. Interact will do another book drive soon, as they are getting good type of books.
Fred Barrett has a full programme in place for our nine RFE visitors. This programme will not fall on a Tuesday, so they will not be available for a normal Rotary Club meet. A night at Fred's home, with open invites to members to mix and mingle and hear what is happening Rotary wise in New Mexico and West Texas. More info nearer the time, we have met some great people on Rotary exchanges.
Melbourne Cup night, is a no meal refund meeting. Homemade soup and bread buns being provided. All proceeds of that evening going to Polio Plus. End Polio Now. Always good fun, don't forget to dress up or down for the occasion. Also a raffle.
Starfish has scheduled for 16th September, pruning trees and vegetation removal. As the Resourse Consent, requires a 1.8 m high fence to be erected around the Rawhiti complex. A car park has also to be implemented
Treasurer Miranda Thompson getting into 'September Steps' mode, as a fund raiser for Cerebral Palsy. So if you would like to sponsor Miranda for this honourable cause, catch up with her next meeting. Miranda will certainly exceed 300000+ steps in September, such is her enthusiasm for this cause.

Concert by the Lake all set to go ahead. Sunday 25th February 2018. Concert organising chair Don Stanley, "that they have engaged Bic Runga as the main star artiste. Obviously now, we all have to prepare the concert venue to support this artiste of the highest calibre". The sub committees of CBL, are into the structure planning to be done .

All committee's will be involved in the budget processes. The Resource Consent allows 2000 members of the public at the venue. But realistic number will be around 700 to 800. Pontoon has to pass an engineers inspection to comply for a fit for purpose certificate. A recommendation will be presented to Directors, as to profit distribution.

Supervisors are requested, to help Henry Clothier oversee 4000 tree seedlings to be planted on his property by Interact young folk. Members are asked to be supervisors to support and mentor this project. This will be a great fundraiser for these guys. This project will get underway ASP, as weekends obviously at the moment is the option for these college students. Register your name with Henry so to be on the short notice email contact list for this project. The weather forecast has to reasonably fine.

Parlez-vous Français! Diane and I happened to stay at a central Paris boutique hotel, 3rd floor room. Breakfast time, waited for the lift, but were joined by four other Aussie guests at the lift door, one of which was a very ,very well built lad . 30 stone in David's imperial estimation. Small size lift that was a squeeze to all get in! David was pressed against the control panel. Pressed the button for the dining floor, but just as they got under way, it stopped. Started to get very hot and claustrophobic, David managed to press the emergency call button & also read the lift limit of four persons and maximum weight limit. Which both criteria were exceeded . Eventually the lift was winched to an exit position, where the hotel manager met them, and counted them out un-deuv-trois-quatre-cinq-six and with broken French English, wagged his finger and said "naughty. naughty naughty!".
Certainly was a popular 'toy' in the UK late 1950's and early 1960's.That Hula Hoop craze, was then overtaken by the
Yo Yo !! Which also helped with dexterity skill as well.
Harry Davison and Maureen Mansell will get Married at Papamoa, on 16th September. You can catch up with these good folk, at the Model Railway and Art exhibition in Cambridge Town Hall this weekend. Congratulations and all the best for your future together.
