Peter Vossen, opened his first meeting as our club president with the words “sound check”!! Welcomed guests, Leigh Hawe, Ella Hawe, District Governor Leonie Tisch and Joanne Aoake. Change Over was a great night, plenty of laughter and camaraderie. Thank you to the many people that made it a successful night. Was away in Bali last week, bit of Bali Belly after four days . Three days recovery! Cheap holiday, no food, no drinkies. Peter announced Harry Russell has now been a Matamata Rotarian for 42 Years, and made a presentation gift to Harry in acknowledgment of that commitment. It is Peter’s intention to highlight some historical aspects of Rotary each meeting. What is the common denominator of such people as Neil Armstrong, Sir Winston Churchill, Eric Tanner, Walt Disney, Sir Edmond Hillary, President John F. Kennedy and Alice Clothier to name a few. They are Rotarians. Plus Matamata Rotary Kauri Grove, planted in 1980 to celebrate 75 years of Rotary. Also "What are you smiling about!" a explanation challenge to a member each week. Guest speaker Ella Hawe, introduced to the meeting assembly by Sheryl Ertel. Ella spoke on her recent Rotary Matamata sponsored Outward Bound experiences. All smiles when recounting the three week course. Physical and mental challenges Outward Bound presents, certainly pushed her own boundaries and was determined not to give up. Assigned to the Haythorn Watch Group, the course started with challenges such as no watches, no iphone so cut off from the world of facebook, snapchat and the like. Out in sail boats over night in stormy conditions, white water kayaking with capsize training then the real time rollovers during the actual white water ride. The Haythorn team developed camaraderie that helped all get past individuals mental barriers , and the challenges became more easier to accomplish, which included 1 day of community service, 7 kms run and a half marathon, stay put 20 pace limit solo days at a designated area in the bush with limited food resource. But with bivvy material , sleeping bag and toilet bucket and small amount of loo paper! Two day tramp and required gear near the conclusion of the course , was a high for the Haythorn Watch group. Compass bearing reading needs more skill attention than does GPS on the iphone !!! Her fellow team members attended this Outward Bound challenge for many reasons which Ella found quite emotive, as to the many reasons put forward individually. Finishing her very enlightening verbal presentation. Thanked Rotary Matamata for the opportunity to attend Outward Bound, developed great friendships with her fellow peers. Plus very proud of the fact, her times for the running segments were very acceptable to skite about. Questions from members included, “did you run out of your toilet paper allocation?”.”Would you do it again?”, “ How did you survive without your mobile phone, facebook, and all the other instant communication technologies of modern cell phones?”. Ella answered all with confidence in reply, possibly a direct result of personal skill set development with her Outward Bound experience. Richard Metcalfe summed up perfectly when presenting our appreciation for her achievement story, “Ella a good role model for youth of our district, and her achievement overshadows other youth activity that does not help our community”. Ella is a Walton girl, and currently studying for her Bachelor Degree in Nursing.
Rotary Matamata has been requested to be represented on the College 100 year jubilee committee. An important issue for our club, as to support a successful celebration outcome. Hopefully this position can be filled before the end of this July month. There is a resource of 56 members of Rotary Matamata to support our club representative.Please contact Michelle 0277 225 599. Hosting of Lincoln students is set for Sunday 20th and Tuesday 22nd August.Fifty five (55) students EACH date to be hosted. Shunt sheet will continue to go round next meeting, for you to positively consider . Please ask friends and family if they would be also willing to support Rotary Matamata, by hosting a Lincoln Students(s). It is always a good fund raiser for our club, historically has been acknowledged to be a really good social activity with our graduates career future in agricultural science. Un pájaro duro, fue a Spookers, encontró que no da miedo en absoluto participar en esa actividad de entretenimiento. Todas las sonrisas como siempre, pero conseguir un poco más cámara tímida. Como realmente está encontrando su propia identidad ahora. Uno de los resultados positivos del Intercambio de Jóvenes de Rotary.

Well, as it happened , I was in Bali at the same time as President Peter and Chris. I am normally quiet and below the radar on holiday (Yeah Right).Nice pool, seemed to be quite large with a narrowing with a bridge across. Thought I would swim from one end to the other. Just going under the bridge WHAM!!! Into a concrete wall built under the bridge. Cuts, abrasions , blood and possibly some expletive(s).. But to top that, motor scooter riding with Peter and Chris. NO helmets!! Fell off, got befriended by a gentleman who assisted in arrangement of medical attention, that one could not recognise as a medical centre of any description. Who properly and dutifully stitched up an open wound....... add insult to injury, it appeared I was the youngest bikie in Bali !!!!
