Tonight was another Zoom meeting, with some being quite clever with their backgrounds (as evidenced by photo) Not sure where nearly half of our Club was, but most on here just wanted to be where Merv was!
President Presents...
Robert advised that on this day September 7, 1940, 300 German bombers raided London, in the first of 57 consecutive nights of bombing. This bombing “blitzkrieg” (lightning war) would continue until May 1941. Also on this day in 1815 a chap by name of John McDoull Stuart was born in Scotland. The Stuart Highway linking Adelaide to Darwin was named after him as he successfully trailblazed his way across the continent in 1862. It took close to 18 months and nearly cost him his life.
The visit by Rotary Club of South Canterbury is proceeding, Covid willing. The dates have been locked in 6-10 March, there is time to put together an interesting tour for them. Hosts will be required.
The impending District Governor visit appears to be going ahead but may be via Zoom. As September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month, it has been suggested we use this meeting to promote it by wearing blue. If you have blue lycra even better!! However you may need to stand up to show it off fully.
Jane confirmed there have been three applicants put forward by the College for the Science forum in January. Interviews for suitability to be held shortly.
Robert asked if the Club was happy to donate the five now defunct display boards to Putaruru Timber Museum. The general consensus of the attendees was this was acceptable as they were no longer needed by us and had nowhere for their storage. Alice will arrange this.
Dog park proposal submission still to be considered by Council.
