Parting Thought
A 'blue' joke from Peter Vossen

I went to the doctor recently for a prostate exam. Asked him "where shall I hang my pants?" Doc replied "next to mine!!"
Our 2021-22 Board of Directors

Tonight we had the pleasure of District Governor 2021/22 Ross Pinkham attend our Zoom meeting, we had all hoped that it could have been in person. As previously suggested to honour Blue September and his visit, members wore blue sportswear (where possible) as Ross is promoting the benefits of physical activities and is himself a keen cyclist.

Other guests included Johnny Dryden; District Membership Chair from Rotary Te Kuiti, and Taylor, Neo, Ashlyn and Rique from Matamata College Interact. The College Interacters and Robert, Michelle, Eric and wife Jean were recently involved in some garden planting at the Matamata Community garden, behind the Union Parish church down Peria Road.

President Presents...

Robert advised that on this day September 28,
551: Confucius was born... how do they know this?
1901: Television personality Ed Sullivan was in born in Harlem, NY
1924: two aviators ended their around-the-World flights. It took them 175 days with 57 stops, over 44342 kilometres.

Robert asked all members on the Zoom call to donate $10 each for Blue September to support Prostate awareness. Anyone not on this call could/should donate more!

The Board has approved $1500 which was donated to Matamata Playcentre for a 3 tier water feature.

Updated: Covid willing our next 'actual' - not Zoom - meeting will be at the normal venue but with some changes. To be 6 seated at each table and one person to go and collect food and drinks. It was to be for our Club night, but now hopefully for our guest speaker night meeting.

Members Announcements...

As you would have heard former Mayor Neil Algar passed away recently, he was made a Paul Harris Fellow April 21st 2015 and his wife Eunice on 30th June 1992.
They were both attendees at our Rotary meetings. Barry McKey as our local historian advised Robert of this.

Interactor Neo reminded us of their upcoming quiz night

Dog park proposal submission still to be considered by Council, last day to submit is October 10.

Guest Speaker: District Governor Ross Pinkham QPM, JP

David H, Area 3 Assistant Governor 2019-22 welcomed Ross, they have known each other for many years. Ross is from the Taradale club and is retired from the NZ Police.
He spent the day visiting around Matamata with Robert and Leonie, and even managed to fit in a cycle ride. Later he was hosted by David and Lisette, he thanked them all kindly.

As District Governor, Ross's theme and focus for his year is on Health and Well-being, here are some ideas for the Club:
  • Set up a cycling or a walking group
  • Get speakers on bone density etc
  • Arrange to have blood pressure tests done at a club meeting
  • Could look at doing health comparisons... check weight (for example) now and then again later on.
He highlighted this year's 7 areas of focus: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies and lastly protecting the environment.
As governor he also discussed current International President Shekhar Mehta, and his theme and focus... "Do more...grow more" and "Each one... bring one".

Due to this being via Zoom, Ross has emailed out his presentation, also attached is a copy of the Rotary Days of Service challenge that Shekhar Mehta has issued. If anyone hasn't seen it please contact Maz, David H or Stew.

Most importantly Taradale Club is hosting the District Conference for Ross at the Napier War Memorial and Convention Centre Friday 20th May 2022. With cycling, golf, art deco and a wine tour on offer... this is one not to be missed!!

Jane thanked Ross for his visit and presentation, we look forward to the time it can be in person rather than virtual.

Note from the Editor:

As we are concentrating on health and well-being this year I thought the following was appropriate...

"My body is a Temple... no, not to be worshipped... but ancient and crumbling".

If you have any interesting stories, jokes or photos please feel free to email them... to me!
