Our 2021-22 Board of Directors
Tonight was a Club night, and Sergeant Job was full of witticisms.
President Presents...
Robert had a quick welcome to those members attending, however as it was a club night didn't proceed with his normal "this day in history".
A reminder that the Matamata Club requires all patrons to be fully vaccinated and must show a Vaccine Pass to be allowed on the premises, and please do not go through to main club area directly from our meeting room.
Members update:
Ron Langland's memorial was to be held February 4,but due to current circumstances this has been cancelled.
Robert put the question to members on what support there would be for the price to be $50 for our 75 year anniversary hard bound book. Members present were unanimous in their support of this. David H and his support team will continue their efforts to produce a top product to celebrate the Club's 75th anniversary.
Guest Speaker Fred Barrett on Tongan eruption.
Fred Barrett spent time in Tonga back in the 1970's. Tonight he gave us his geography and geology knowledge on the make-up of the Kingdom of Tonga. Tonga has never been colonised, instead it has it's own hereditary constitutional Monarchy. There is a volcanic chain running North to South to the west of the many islands that make up the Kingdom of Tonga. Fred pointed out where the volcano actually erupted. Most of the Tongan group are of coral geology and average approximately 1.5m above sea level, there are outlying coral reefs that act as a baffle to the Pacific Ocean waves. However the enormous waves created by the eruption just barrelled over those reefs and flooded many low lying areas. Some islands were completely swamped, there were reports of folk clinging and children tied to coconut trees to prevent them being swept out to sea. We know from media the damage to infrastructure was quite significant, however Fred gave a statistic that conflicts with the notion of rising sea levels, saying "81% of the Pacific Islands are bigger now than they were 50 years ago".
Note from the Editor:
