A few things coming up to keep in mind:

  • Just a note for everyone, as Barry has been our main set up man in the past, if you are listed on reception duty, please try and arrive early to help with setting up the table and signs etc.
  •
  • Beth Taylor has been contacted by Christian Biernath-Wupping and his partner Anita from the German Rotary Passport ECO Planet club, who will be visiting Matamata next Thursday 16th and will be parking their campervan at Beth's. Christian does voluntary work for the UK based Shelterbox NGO. Unfortunately they are unable to attend one of our meetings, but Beth is organising a dinner at The Good Merchant from 5.30 on that evening. If you would like to come along and meet Christian and Anita, please let Beth know asap so that she can book numbers for dinner.
  •
  • Helpers required for the Tractortrek in February. They will be at Matamata Primary on the 23rd and Hinuera School on the 24th raising awareness  of child wellbeing and anti bullying. There will also be a display on Saturday 25th at the domain. There is a shunt sheet for helpers or please contact David Hulme if you can lend a hand. During that week, we will also be having our dinner meeting on Thursday the 23rd instead of Tuesday the 22nd, as a barbeque at Opal Hot Springs with the Tractortrek participants. More details to come closer to time.
  •
  • Applications for RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Award are now open and close on the 28th February. The program is being held from the 15th to 20th April. If you know of a suitable applicant, please advise Maz or Beth asap.
  •
  • Spud in a Bucket weigh in on Tuesday 7th March - helpers required - shunt sheet will be going around so save the date.
  •
  • Rotary Run the Runway organised by Mike Cahill and Hamilton Rotary Clubs are requiring assistance on Sunday 12th March for their event. A shunt sheet will be going around, so please keep that date in mind if you can help.
  •
  • Morrinsville Rotary have a quiz night on Friday 17th March $25.00 per person, team of 6.
  •
  • Rotorua have their Annual Walking Festival on the 18th-19th March. Beth has some brochures available if interested.
  •
  • Hobbiton Marathon coming up on 25th March. This was a great event that we helped with last year and looks to be even bigger this year. Pop the date in your calendar if you can help - shunt sheet will be going around in the near future.

  • Please remember that you must ring the club answer phone and apologize or advise of extra guests before 9am on any meeting date.

Parting Thought

Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular

Thanks - Peter Thissen

Hi everyone!!!

President Alice Albright opened the meeting and gave
us the sad news that our good friend and devoted Rotarian Barry McKey, passed away over the weekend.

Barry was an outstanding Rotarian of over 50 years, joining Matamata Rotary in May 1972, he served as the club President in the 1997/1998 year and in many varying roles throughout his time, especially as the club historian in his latter years.

He was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow in December 1998, a Sapphire Pin in March 2012 and a double Sapphire pin in June 2022 for his dedicated service to Rotary.

Barry dedicated his life to the community through the Matamata Rotary Club and the Matamata Historical Society. He was passionate about all that he did and he will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service for Barry will be held on Saturday 11th February at 11am, at the Broadway Funeral Home Chapel. Rotarians are asked to attend if you can and Rotary will perform a Guard of Honor as a fitting send off for Barry.

President Alice then read the following poem as a tribute to Barry.

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
To sweet eternity.

We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
But never meant to stay...

Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journeys quicker,
For some the journeys slow.

And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the Lord.

On a much happier note, President Alice then inducted our newest member Roisin Mc Quillan.

Roisin is an Equine Vet at Matamata Veterinary Equine division. She is looking forward to being involved in the Matamata Rotary Club and participating in all of our events and activities. Welcome Roisin.

And I think it is only fitting that I leave you with a beautiful image of Barry.

Thank you Barry for your many years devoted to our club, your tireless work as a historian, your sense of humor and the fact that you were just an all round good bloke. We will miss you greatly. Rest in peace my friend.
