Volume 79 - No 37
24 June 2025
President Wade and his team for 2024/25

Emcees for the evening.... (below) David and Nicole. Hobbiton Movie Set hosted us in their marquee.... we were truly well cared for.

One of his last jobs in his role as President was to recognise someone who he felt embodied the "Service Above Self" award. Lianne (pronounced the Dutch way Lee-Arna) is amongst our newer members and in her time has thrown herself  wholeheartedly into anything and everything with passion and commitment. Well done!!

Incoming District Governor Ken Smith presented Lindsay Tisch with a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire Pin. Lindsay has had a lifetime of helping his country and his countrymen. 18 years as an MP, leading numerous trade delegations overseas, and from 2008 until his retirement from politics in 2017 he was the Presiding Officer of Parliament and also served as assistant and deputy Speaker of the House. He was awarded the NZ Commemoration Medal by Royal Warrant from Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 to mark 150 years of NZ nationhood. It was given as recognition for contribution made to some aspect of NZ life. Lindsay was given a PHF by District after he opted to retire so he could support and assist Leonie in her District Governor's role. Whether he is on the Pohlen Heath Board or helping us fundraise or driving the Health Shuttle, you know he cares deeply and this is why Matamata Club wanted to acknowledge Lindsay for his ongoing support to the Club and the wider community.

        Brian Massey
Brian, as Art Director for "The Hobbit"and "The Lord of the Rings" and Project Manager and Arborist for Hobbiton Movie Set was the perfect choice as guest speaker with Hobbiton being the venue for this year's Changeover. It then was appropriate to have Dave Johnson introduce Brian, as he was a hobbit in the first movie. Let's say it was a short part!
Brian has been involved with the Hobbiton Movie Set since its inception, he has designed, built, and landscaped. Helped build trees, move trees, care for trees. He also had a large role as Project Manager in getting the "Gatehouse" - I-Site building transformed back in 2012. It has become one of the most photographed buildings in NZ.
Back in 2004 he worked on the construction of the garden display in the British Chelsea Garden Show (now on permanent display in Taupo) NZ's first ever entry... winning Gold. Later in 2017, winning Best in Show, Horticultural Excellence, and People's Choice Award with the "Beekeeper's Hobbit Hole" at the NZ Flower and Garden Show, this was created at Hobbiton and then dismantled and reassembled in Auckland.... no small feat.
Late 2023 the two Hobbit holes were opened to the public, the latest and greatest addition to the set (after the Green Dragon of course) Brian worked tirelessly on this project.
It was easy to see his passion and creative drive in all he has achieved, we wish him well and look forward to his next project, whatever that may be.
