Back in 2015 on a flight back from Sydney Krishna met a gentleman who introduced him to volunteer work, this chance meeting led to five trips to Fiji since then - there would have been more but Covid interrupted. The Sri Sathya Sai International Organization is a spiritual and humanitarian non-governmental organisation, founded in the 1960s by Sathya Sai Baba. They operate internationally and have centres in 120 countries. There is very poor infrastructure in Fiji, so medical camps are organised by the SSSIO, usually annually to help people who would probably not get the help they need otherwise.. 

Over 60 medical professionals and general volunteers from Australia and New Zealand are joined by doctors, nurses and volunteers from Fiji. During the medical camps, volunteers provide a number of health services and dispense free medication and reading glasses where prescribed. As they are working in field environments, with basic equipment, and seeing anywhere from 500 -700 people in a day there is no chance to do the usual dental work but if the case is too bad then referrals can be made to have the treatment done elsewhere. Prescriptions are given and then dispensed at the camp, along with plenty of advice. Patients are initially triaged then moved on to the associated medical profession for which their complaint has been diagnosed - some will go to more than one. It is extremely tiring, as not only the volume of patients means a long day, but they travel from place to place during their stay, and manage to fit in some training for local health professionals too. Krishna loves being part of such a fantastic organisation and helping people and seeing their happy faces (not something dentists get to see much of!)
