A very good attendance of members and guests, plenty of good chatter that 6 gongs with the gavel for 'Sergeant' Glenda to bring the meeting to order. Michelle welcomed visiting Rotarians and guests and was going to show visuals to update members on the progress in our Rotary joint venture in Pakistan, which is to assist a school that the 75 children have very minimal learning aids. But this will now be next week, briefly the project progress for class rooms and computer room 85% completed to date. Michelle explained the Raffle Tickets for sale on behalf of Waikato Sunrise, raising funds for Hospice. They have partnered with Balloons over Waikato to promote this fundraiser, plus the first prize is flight for two in a Balloon. Michelle also asked if members could help being 'Crowd Ambassadors' for the anticipated 8000 people expected to view the Hot Air Balloon spectacle. A shunt sheet for members to consider volunteering, in Hamilton Saturday 25th March 2.30pm to 9.30pm.

Guest speaker Peter Schulte topic was Escape from East Germany 1980. From the Saxony region of that then communist regime, where even family members were so indoctrinated that any disobedience of rules would be reported to the authorities. His work "apprenticeship" path was to be a chef, but it did give him the opportunity to view West Germany , which to him was clear as night and day in comparison to lifestyle. Compulsory military conscription was for minimum of 18 months, but he and his close friend joined for a 5 year stint. As observation saw long term conscripts get treated better. As a Cook in the army, after basic training officer rank was automatic for military cooks. He also became a tank driver as his unit was posted to Siberia on the Chinese border for 6 months. he will to survive was to accomplish adequate nutrition to his unit, bartering their initial meat supplies for Vodka, which was later used to barter for fresh meat later in the deployment, He even helped machine gun housed free range chickens in minus 30 degree Celsius and even had US similar insignia stencilled temporally on the vehicles used. Plus if you 'donuts' with a heavy tank, you make a good hole for freezer storage and concealment !!! . The Russian Military top brass did make an unsuccessful enquiry into that. Eventually his unit got posted to Yugoslavia, whence him and his mate drove a tank through the border into Italy. Not being able to speak a word of English at that time, they were eventually to end up in New Zealand, taken on as chefs in Wellington James Cook Hotel, then Peter went onto the Sheraton ,Rotorua. Where on one occasion, the then Prime Minister Rob Muldoon came to his aid ,as he fell from a ladder changing a light bulb. Since the unification, Peter was able to reunite with his family members, and continues to do so. He did say to him, New Zealand has changed in the time he has been in New Zealand. He has given back to his host country ,by public office as a district councillor and currently President of Tirau Lions. Members had a bit of a laugh when he quipped that Henry Clothier once tried to sell him the Tirau events centre !!!!!!! Members appreciated his presentation and he reciprocated by thanking us for him to tell his life experiences.

David G. also reconciles Christmas Pudding and Tarts are a bit light on income. Maybe some members have forgot to pay for those treats.

Mike F. also thanks his car parking team, for concert by the lake. No issues, all vehicles arrived, parked and departed safely. Editor notes that Mike had a good management plan for his HR team.(ps. not to forget Merv King, providor of food and drink to the parking team).
Don Stanley will present his Concert report to club executive, indications are a positive $11k fund raiser. But a bit short of a target of $20k. Members were quite happy with that announcement, as we were all aware of the vagaries of nature that even prevented a major working bee the Friday prior to concert.
Michelle commented on a busy start of the year thus far, very proud of the success of activities and projects such as the concert. On that note a big thank you again to Peter and Ineke for their support and enthusiasm to host the concert. Members acclamation well deserved acknowledgement of that.

A Rotarian 39 years. Highlight when President of Kumeu, an aspiring politician was a member. When he became an MP, as a club fund raiser he would be the guest speaker and 190 people heard his views on issues. When he became leader of the opposition, another guest speaker slot with 450 people attending. When John Key became Prime Minister and afforded time to his Rotary Club, 698 people attended for a club fund raiser. Jim reckons not bad for a 23 member club! His club presented him with a Paul Harris Fellow, recognition of his service and leadership to his Rotary Kumeu Club.

Inner Wheel providing deserts for the 4th April meeting. Always good value and delicious for $5 per person. These deserts for Rotary is a fund raiser to go towards a bench on Centennial Drive, as a memorial to Gillian Robinson.
