The annual Matamata Brass Festival of Music is on the weekend of 24-25th May at the Matamata Intermediate school, 5/6 volunteers are needed. For the newer members if you haven't been, this is well worth attending. Text Stew if you can assist.

Welcome to all, it was unusual to have a two week break. We had Karla Leadbetter coming along for another look at the Club. David H was standing in as Sergeant, he told how the late Pope Francis had been made an honorary Rotarian when he was still a Cardinal so became the first Pope to have been offered and accepted a membership.

Robert S advised that he and Pauline moved to NZ 27 April 1995, 30 years ago ... great decision!
DavidH discussed the impending friendship visit by about 12 Rotarians from New Mexico and Texas October 25-28th.
There are several shows on at present, but there will not be a Rotary attendance, so make your own plans.
Roisin spoke about not just the thrill of donating the dictionaries (mentioned previously) but the satisfaction of seeing the happiness in the children's faces. She received a comment from a parent of how grateful they were for this.
She then advised RYLA weekend went well, photos supplied of Zanthe working hard in the kitchen... well done guys! This year's candidate will speak to the Club soon.

Krishna Narayanasami - Unconventional Conventions
Mike F introduced fellow Rotarian Krishna, "Best dentist in town", to talk on his visit to South America and Antarctica earlier this year. Unconventional Conventions are a way of combining education with travel. On the cruise there are 24 hours of dental conference lectures. Krishna and wife Santhy, both being dentists found this combination alluring, a further incentive to go was our Danni (Chilean Exchange student 2017) had just graduated as a Midwife and as one set of her NZ host parents they had promised to visit her when that happened... the timing was impeccable. Danni has grown from a fabulous young student to an even more fabulous young woman. The trip included Patagonia, Brazil, Iguazu Falls, with an incredible carnival in Rio... with the music, festivities and dancing. But naturally Antarctica was most awe inspiring, Krishna got to do a polar plunge.... a phrase about brass monkeys came to mind!
Below is the Iguazu Falls and the Ocean Endeavour, the cruise ship they travelled in. He had hoped to show some clips on the night, but as they didn't work, we look forward to seeing them another time.
