Michelle wanted a show of hands to indicate interest in attending a movie night at Tivoli in Cambridge to watch "The Duke".
This is a joint fundraiser for Polio Plus. Approximately 30 wanted to attend. Michelle will keep us updated.
Peter V advised progress on dog park slow but wheels are turning. The fence posts have been put in and the large border trees have been trimmed back.
Miranda informed of cancellation of RYLA for this year however at this stage RIPEN was still proceeding.
Eric asked for volunteers for upcoming community project. Mrs Cowling (husband was a past Rotarian) of Tawari Street is not able to maintain her gardens and so 1 or 2 working bees will be arranged to help her out. Michelle asked if one could be a weekend so Interactors could help too.

Surprise!!

As mentioned amongst our guests and attendees was local Editor Caron Stewart. Apparently she was a bit bemused as to why her presence was required?? Assured that as this was a special night it was probably in her role as a photographer.
So when David Hulme got up to announce another recipient was to be awarded a PHF and she was asked to come up to the podium...sans camera.....she was flabbergasted!! Caron's free "much-relied-on-for-local-information" weekly paper and her contributions to the community prompted the Club to recognise her for her efforts. For a journalist she surprisingly had little to say... which said it all.

Our 2021-22 Board of Directors
Job welcomed all our guests; Margaret Westlake, Andrea Collins, Caron Stewart, Pauline Stuart, Ineke Thissen and Lisette Hulme and of course DG Ross Pinkham. This was to be an auspicious night and not just for the attendance of our Club's youngest member Ava accompanied by mum Alice (President 2022/23) and dad Ashley.

President Presents...

This day in history

World Scout Day
1857 this was in honour of the birthdate of Lord Baden-Powell founder of the Scout Movement. Along with sister Agnes he also founded Girl Guides.

1881 The official ceremony was held to celebrate the erection of Cleopatra's Needle, one of three in the world. The 200-ton granite obelisk was moved in June 1880 by a modified steamship, followed by some amazing feats till it finally came to it's final resting place. The stone had stood in the clear dry Egyptian desert air for nearly 3,000 years and had undergone little weathering. In a little more than a century in the climate of New York City, pollution and acid rain have heavily pitted its surfaces and the hieroglyphs are now barely decipherable. A time capsule buried beneath the obelisk has an 1870 U.S. census, a Bible, a Webster's Dictionary, the complete works of William Shakespeare, a guide to Egypt and a copy of the USA Declaration of Independence.

1997 The world's most famous sheep Dolly's existence was announced to the public on this day. On Dolly's name, it was said "Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's.

2011 At 12.51 p.m. a magnitude 6.3 earthquake caused severe damage in Christchurch and Lyttelton killing 185 people

Famous births...
1732 George Washington
1918 world's verified tallest man Robert Wadlow was born. Measuring 8ft11, 272cm he showed no signs he had stopped growing at his untimely death at age 22. It took 20 people to carry the coffin as he weighed 199kg and the coffin was 3.28m long.
1928 Bruce Forsyth
1950 Julie Walters
1959 Robert's sister Margaret was born on the same day as his father's aunt Lizzie who died aged 106, she lived in three centuries.
1962 Steve Irwin

Members update:

Kevin Sing advised update on Christmas trees: 210 sold netting a profit of approx. $5000, a very good effort indeed. This lead into the real reason he was standing at the podium. Kevin had the distinct pleasure of announcing the recipient of tonight's PHF award (Paul Harris Fellow) Owen Westlake. Owen has been a Rotarian since joining Winton club back in 2004, he has had many roles over this time. He was selected due to his unfailing enthusiasm for every task, and continual involvement in our activities. Our Club is the better for having him there!

Guest Speaker  Ross Pinkham, QPM, JP, District Governor 9930 2021/22

David Hulme introduced our guest. Ross has been a Rotarian since joining in 1984, with some time off due to his illustrious career in the NZ Police force (43 years). This moved him around not only NZ but overseas posting as well, with most notably his involvement in the 2002 Bali bombing investigations and as the Police Attache for the NZ Embassy in Bangkok. His service to Rotary has been recognised by not only a Paul Harris Fellowship, but also a Sapphire pin and a double Sapphire pin. The Commonwealth awarded him the honour of the Queen's Police Medal for his outstanding service to the Force.
Ross spoke to us previously in a Zoom meeting so just touched on those points again. He said it was great though to get around and visit the clubs in his district as this was something easier said than done due to Covid. During his year as DG, Ross, a keen cyclist and swimmer has wanted to emphasise the importance of keeping fit, with eating healthily and exercising regularly, so was chuffed to see our Club in sports gear showing him our commitment to this too. He acknowledged those who were contributing in their roles; Michelle Tanner as Polio Foundation Chair, Interact co-ordinator and Give Every Child a Future Champion, David Hulme as Area 3 Assistant Governor and Public Image and Media support, David's wife Lisette in her extensive work for Days for Girls and Maz McIvor for her role as Rural Support liaison. Ross asked us to keep on with the good work and appreciated our contributions.
Fred Barrett thanked Ross, giving him a pen and advising that as is our Club custom we would make a donation on his behalf to End Polio now.
  Ross Pinkham
Note from the Editor:
My humble apologies for the rather long delay in getting out this Bulletin from our last meeting. Obviously it ended up being a bit more auspicious than we had realised but in these times not to be unexpected. Hopefully everyone then, and since, who has been poorly is recovering well. Great that we were all checking up on each other.

Side note... loved seeing our "chatty Cathy" Caron gobsmacked... nice to know that this award meant as much to her as it would to any Rotarian.

A reminder if you are unable to do your Club meeting role, to please find a stand-in.
