David H advised the club's 75th Anniversary book is proceeding well, however he needs more photos for it - preferably pre-2000s. Also an email was sent out re: Napier Conference. If members wish to stay together please let him know and he will arrange.

Parting Thought

As Henry Ford said...
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

Our 2021-22 Board of Directors
Our first meeting back at the Club in 2022, a shift to Red Traffic light may have diminished numbers of attendance but everyone was in high spirits. Possibly due to Harry shouting the bar... celebrating his 95th birthday!! Way to go, just imagine what he has seen in his lifetime.

Job was away so Corporal Murray dished out the punishment. Some good fines, there were a lot of wedding anniversaries to be celebrated.

President Presents...

On this day in history...

1533 Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn but after failing to produce him a male heir she was tried and found guilty for treason and adultery and was beheaded 3 years later aged 35. Anne was considered to be one of the most divisive people in her time as a key figure in the political and religious upheaval that marked the start of the English Reformation.

1759 Robert Burns was born. Most noted as a bard,
he is regarded as the pioneer of the Romantic movement. Robbie is deemed to be Scotland's most notable cultural icon, he died at 37.

1924 The first Winter Olympics were held at Chamonix, France. The five events were curling, bobsleigh, skating, Nordic skiing and hockey.

1961 101 Dalmatians was released onscreen in America. This film was a major success, pulling the Disney studio out of financial trouble caused by the box office failure of the previous Disney animated feature film Sleeping Beauty.

A reminder that the Matamata Club requires all patrons to be fully vaccinated and must show a Vaccine Pass to be allowed on the premises.

Members update:

Ron Langland's memorial will be held February 4, although he was a past Rotarian there will not be a guard of honour. Due to our current situation they are asking for numbers of attendees, please advise Stew if you wish to be one.

For those not at last week's BBQ Robert advised of Vice President Alice and Ashley's birth of their beautiful daughter Ava on Friday the 14th January. We are sure to see her back soon.

An update on Leonie's husband Lindsay. He has blood poisoning and has been staying in Waikato Hospital. Unfortunately there is a No Visitor policy in place.  He is in our thoughts as we wish him a speedy recovery.

Congratulations to Dave and Diane for 50 years marriage. Robert and Pauline 45 years and Krishna and Shanthy for 32 years. You are all an inspiration.

Guest Speaker   Michelle Tanner updating on GECAF and Polio Eradication

Peter T introduced Michelle, but as he said, she has been a member of our club since 2008, President 2016/17, started Interact at Matamata College, been on District Foundation for years and is now Chair, and a firm advocate for GECAF (give every child a future) so we know Michelle!!

Michelle started by giving us some history on Polio, there are images dating it back to 1400BC. What differs it from other viruses is that humans are the only host. Children are at most risk, and whilst it has a very high infection rate 95% people will not show  symptoms. To eradicate this disease we need an effective vaccine, an effective vaccine delivery system (needs to be kept cold for it to survive) constant surveillance for hotspots and the political and social will to make this all happen. In 1984 WHO said they would help Rotary International in it's goal to eradicate Polio but they had to raise $120m first, by 1988 they came back with US$247m, so a resolution was passed and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched. The following year Rotary launched PolioPlus.
In 1988 there were 350000 cases worldwide in 125 endemic countries. In 2021 two cases in two countries. Many others notably the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have stepped up to the challenge of raising funds.
The goal of complete eradication is in sight, however delays occur when volunteers cannot get into countries due to war or civil unrest to continue vaccinating. The global Covid pandemic has issued it's own challenges too, but in this instance the knowledge and set up have been put to use to help fight Covid.

Michelle gave quick RGECAF update re: Covid.
Cold chain equipment is being used for COVID-19 vaccines
COVID-19 vaccination training added to RGECAF healthcare worker education
Data collected to inform RGECAF communication strategies is informing COVID-19 vaccine programme planning.

Graeme thanked Michelle for her talk, he found it immensely informative and her knowledge is amazing. We normally give a certificate and a pen to our guest speakers, Michelle happily accepted the pen but we could keep the certificate... she has got quite a few already!!

Michelle as Chair of District Foundation presented a certificate to Past President Kevin in honour of our Club's contribution.
Note from the Editor:

Remember if you have any stories or jokes to please pass them on to me.
I want to reiterate that it was fabulous having Michelle talk to us, her passion and knowledge is fantastic and we are so proud she is in our Club.
