Peter all smiles when he welcomed members and guests to our meeting. He had a great weekend, with Chris they went to the Cirque du Soleil show in Auckland,. As he had the right coloured jacket on, that was the invitation for a tipple or three with a political election party at their hotel on return.Drew members attention to this final meeting of October, which has the Rotary Theme : Basic Education and Literacy Month. Which led into acknowledging Michelle Tanner off to Juang School, Pakistan. A school support project she championed while in her presidency of Rotary Matamata. The school new Literacy Centre is formally opened on Friday 6th October. Another successful Rotary project that we partnered with a Rotary Club in the United States.

As a former Director of Sunny Park-Hinuera Co-Operative Dairy Company, is well known for his untiring effort to encourage the smaller co-operative dairy companies to be part of New Zealand Co-Operative Dairy Group. His endeavours did not go unnoticed, and became an Director of NZ Dairy Group. Ralf also wrote a successful book, on the history of Te Poi and Hinuera districts. He worked hard for his farmers.
President Peter with guest speaker Ben Moore. Chairman of Matamata District Federated Farmers Inc. Ben married Lizzie Wilding,they dairy farm on Rangitanuku Road, Okoroire. A passionate supporter for the Sharemilking industry, to which statistics show are the most efficient producers within our NZ dairy industry. Took up the leadership role in Federated Farmers' to advocate on behalf of it's farming membership. NZ has morphed into bureaucratic processes, to which he has 30 professional Policy Staff to support him.
Guest speaker Ben Moore was formally introduced to our meeting by Owen Westlake, who highlighted his previous involvement in Matamata District Federated Farmers' and how Matamata Farmers' Trust was formed. Ben Moore is a Trustee. Born in Hampshire , England at an early age, Private Schooled in Dorset, that had him suitably qualified to be a £240 a fortnight 16 year old Stalking Gilly.( A person who carried the firearm and lunch box for the rich and famous on shoots in rural England) .Attended Agricultural College for a year that not only included a recognised qualification, but also knowledge of various alcoholic beverages; as being part of that student fraternity. Became a game Keeper and breeder of Pheasants for a while, before he came to NZ as an 18 yo, milking cows at Maketu. Travelled around Rotorua, met Lizzie Wilding and also did a short stint as a game Keeper for John wells. Work Visa ran out, returned to UK and learn't some useful farming skills working for an agricultural contractor. Returned and married Lizzie to milk 450 cows on some of their own land and land lease arrangement in Okoroire. Takes a very keen interest in New Zealands' agricultural primary production sectors, and has already accepted rural leadership roles . Has a keen interest in the NZ sharemilking industry and rural mental health issues. Rural suicide in NZ is an untouched real time topic, as compared to the UK in his opinion. Unfortunate exposure to a close friend taking his life, has now made Ben a staunch advocate for rural mental health. The world is a fast moving place, our agricultural industry is always positively responding . We have and will continue to further improve environmentally, and viewed to be getting better at mitigation to improve the farming footprint, as compared to urban NZ right now. Unity of all agricultural sectors is at an all time high, as we battle some misinformation on the consequence of agriculture in New Zealand. Within our Regional Council constituency, Healthy Rivers Plan Change 1(PC1) is a biggie for our Policy Staff to be involved with. PC1 will as currently gazetted, will incur unreasonable and associated costs. Taxes on farmers water, highlighted in the general election lead up, turned into a cheap shop due to no back up explanation. Acknowledged already to target land irrigation unfairly. NZ farmers are the most least subsidised in the OECD. Way less than 1%, which is mostly Ministry of Primary Industries support. Ben's comments are his own, and believes New Zealand farming will be very sustainable and will further contribute to New Zealand's economy. Lachie Duncan, 60 year paid up member of Federated Farmers' in thanking Ben for his presentation, and that young people come forward to take on serious leadership roles in New Zealand agriculture.

Concert by the Lake . Sunday 4th March 2018.
A lot of the 'hard yards' with on site development has been done , a few areas of essential upgrading work is required, such as artiste's area. Then of course the important general preparation working bee's. We are all responsible for promoting the Concert by the Lake, from here on in. 800 patronage to our next concert is realistically achievable, if each member can attract 8 adult paying guests x 56 = 400 plus, then our efforts will be well rewarded.

Bridge Club offered their car park for our use for Rotary Meetings at St John hall. So that the road intersection is not congested with parked cars, when no room left at St John car park members use. So please use the offer to park your vehicles at the Bridge Club.
Spreading the word of our guest speakers, that would be of interest for people is to be publicly gazetted in social media and other avenues to attend our meetings.
Melbourne Cup night, is a no meal refund meeting. Homemade soup and bread buns being provided. All proceeds of that evening going to Polio Plus. End Polio Now. Always good fun, don't forget to dress up or down for the occasion. Also a raffle. Members are asked to bring a plate of cake slices or the like please.
Rome Sweet Rome. Musical Theatre production end of November. Keep that in mind. Thespian Ross Bay will keep us up to date with that.

The Maori name for the island is 'Te Puia o Whakaari', which means 'the dramatic volcano'. Last eruption was 2001.

No surprise with my commentary! General Election last Saturday under the Mixed Member Proportional Representation process. We will not know who will make up our Government Benches until at the latest, 12th October. The four top polling parties now into negotiations to see who will make up the 61 seats needed to form a Parliamentary Governing House of Representatives . My wry smile is the compromise regards policy and leadership 'job' opportunity enticement that goes on, to accomplish that. People of New Zealand voted for Mixed Member Proportional election process, to lead and manage our Country.
