Graham spoke on the Island of Smiles Dental Charitable Trust.  He gave a little background info,his first exposure to Rotary was as a GSE to District 5500 1980.Joined Rotary Te Awamutu 1987, held several positions such as club president and district involvement with exchange students and RYLE. Paul Harris Fellow 2006.Not to mention 30 years with RNZ Army retiring with the rank of Colonel. Was CO of the Army Dental Unit. The Trust are current and former staff of Waikato Hospital. It took a year to organise the trust, its mission statement 'To provide voluntary dental work in the Pacific'.  The volunteers first project was in the Fijian village of Daku in 2015. The church stood out as the most pristine building compared to the community housing and hall where they set up their three chair setup. Graham's team spent the nights at Anchora village, accessible only by boat. As they had continuous  contact with the village communities 24/7 ,the cultural interaction presented to them involved quite a few sessions around the Kava bowl. The great impression while doing their basic dental work, was the smiles and bright eyes of the children. Sunday church was paramount , ladies and children wore all white, and gentlemen white top and black sulu. The next project was this year in Lautoka Fiji, yet a again a team of dental volunteers and some medical personnel. The carried out work for Hart Homes Charity, who looked after solo mothers and their children. Team work set up was in a hall but accommodation for the volunteer team was at the Lautoka Beach Resort, which gave them a break from the community they were helping and air conditioned rooms. Only one kava ceremony this trip after 330 patients and 800 extractions. In answer to questions, generally they see poor teeth conditions due to social economic circumstance, poor diet, lot of sugar and rice. They do not do fillings because of the logistics to actually do that. Graham acknowledged the support of WDHB, all volunteers paid their own way doing this charitable work. Plus of course a bit of politics comes into play to actually go to Fiji to do this dental work. David Parker introduced Graham to the lectern, and Kevin Kent made an appreciated summation while presenting him with the End Polio Now Certificate and Rotary pen.
