AMENDMENT:
Last week David H. advised D9930 visit postponed,  however this should have read D9980 Rotary Friendship Exchange visit.

Leonie received an email from Andrew von Dadelszen, Rotary District 9930 Environment Committee Chair, with the following request:
We have lived with Covid for 2 years and it is time that we prepared for life after Omicron. As such I would like to invite you to nominate (if you have one) your Environment Committee Chair, and if not someone who would like to be an Environmental Champion.
Please email Leonie if you are interested in this.

Mike F advised the new sound system was still approximately six weeks away.

Sheryl found a wee notebook from 1964-65 at work recently with some Rotary meeting information. There was a song sung to guest speakers which Sheryl then attempted to sing. The gist of it was all the speakers invited were male!

David H asked again for more pre 2000's photos, especially Apple pie night. He also confirmed Napier Conference still proceeding, but IF it was cancelled then a full refund would be given, also there would not be a cancellation fee for accommodation.

Job is short of Fines material, please contact him if you can help.

President Presents...

This day in history

1587 After 19 years of imprisonment Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, aged 45 is beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle in England for her complicity in a plot to murder Queen Elizabeth I.

1931 Actor James Dean was born. He was the cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement. Famed for his roles in Rebel without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant. He died at age 24 in a car accident.

1942 Japan was victorious in occupying Singapore during WW2 after invading them and establishing a beach head on the weakest part of the island's defence.

1955 Author John Grisham was born. Since 1988 he has written one book a year; with 28 consecutive number-one bestsellers, and his books have sold 300 million copies. His net worth is over $400m.

1972 NZ Women cricketers achieved their first test win against Australia at the 17th attempt (their male counterparts had needed 45). They had lost seven and drawn nine of their previous tests, all against either England or Australia.

Robert enquired whether members would still be interested in a movie night fundraiser with Cambridge Club in support of Polio Plus, sufficient hands were raised indicating approval.

For our impending 75th Anniversary celebrations, more 'significant' events information is required. For example Henry's 2000 flight, Apple pie night, swim-a-thon.

Members update:

Robert asked David W to say farewell on our behalf to Jim Bremner. Jim has been at many a Rotary Club and held all roles (except Secretary). He came to Matamata club 12 years ago and has been an integral member, always willing to help and support where he could. Jim and Mary have suffered some blows over past years and are hoping to simplify life. We are going to miss him immensely.
David H announced his wedding anniversary recently, married to Lisette for 24 years.
Job has been with Matamata Rotary 17 years (with a small break)

Guest Speaker   Memorie Brooky Matamata Brass Band

Lyn Dobbe introduced our speaker, as she found out Memorie has such a social profile that Google was exceedingly helpful in preparation. Apart from growing up in Matamata, she has worked and been a part of I-Site for many years, but is here to talk about her passion... Brass bands.

Memorie started by remembering her last visit here where her mother came along as support but rolled a shiny beetroot off her plate along the white tablecloth so although tonight sister Ayesha is to be on her best behaviour.... she does have more family!
This entertaining start was followed with a photo of Memorie as a young child and her first brass instrument affectionately known as a shrunken tuba. Her love and resultant long affair with brass instruments came from her family being involved at school. There are not a lot of activities that don't cost when you are a large family. However here you turn up and they give you an instrument to play.
Memorie is constantly to the forefront in Brass Band Competition, and has won many solo competitions over the years. She plays in an ANZAC day service most years and feels one of the highest honours as a brass player are the occasions when she is invited to play the Last Post.
Matamata Brass Band was established back in 1935, photos showed all male players, women weren't to join until the 60's. Apparently the issues they had then...funding, personnel, uniforms and instruments are the same issues they face today. Their National grade is D but has been at C (for this to happen they have to win two consecutive years) Memorie is always keen to further her skillset so she participates in other towns/cities for this purpose. Under her guidance back in 2019 she decided that the band needed to do marching, something not done for many years. She commented that "herding cats would have been easier than teaching them to march". Different ages, heights, occupations and physical attributes all came into play. However when they went to Napier for a street march they won!
Memorie finished by thanking Rotary for their continual support.. financially and physically.

Ross Bay thanked Memorie, she has been welcome in his home for years. When she said shrunken tuba....he thought of Graeme Guilford and his shrunken tuber (inside joke re: spud growing comp)!!
  Ross thanking Memorie
Note from the Editor:
I tried to help Job with a fine but he didn't have his hearing aid in. It was called to my attention that during the entire meeting I had sat with my shirt on inside out. I offered to remedy this... but apparently that would have been a 2nd fine!
