Good evening all! to another meeting of fun and fellowship. Welcomed guests Wanda Leadbeater, Neil Bateup ONZM, Ian Blake and Suzanne Lawes.  On the topic of friendships, Peter 39 years ago at 16 years of age, left Matamata College with the then Ellis and Burnand practical skill Award. "Started my building apprenticeship with John MacMillan", and then subsequently with Potter Brothers. John taught me work ethic and the use of good 'ole elbow grease! I have a very special friendship to this day as I talk to you with John and Elaine MacMillan. Friendships are special.
Guest speaker Suzanne Lawes RGN/RSCN, PG dip. in Professional Practice.
Suze is General Manager of Pohlen Hospital. Prior to this position, 10 years with Waikato Hospital finishing as Nurse Director. On reading the Pohlen Hospital General Manager position in situations Vacant, visited Pohlen three times to check it out. Applied, and the rest is history. "Privilege being part of Pohlen" After a brief history to where Pohlen is now, which included acknowledgement to Dr. Neil Algar. Her wit, obvious credentials by the confident manner of explaining an easy to understand broad brief of her Hospital and empathy clearly shown, when discussing her 6 bed End of Life Unit.  There are also 33 general use hospital beds , a primary birthing unit, 25 swing beds, That their patients are proudly looked after by a great team of health professionals and support staff. Announced that Pohlen will soon offer a full campus of services, when our District Nurses will be located at Pohlen Hospital. A busy out patient department that cover many health issues, and on campus there are many support services that can viewed as a 'one stop shop' hospital. The health providers within Pohlen Hospital are business partners twhich their occupancy helps cash flow, plus District Health Board contracts. Pohlen  is only one of seven charitable hospitals in New Zealand. She described the Vision, Values and Mission, and the Strategic Planning she implements for the Board of Governance. There are some anomaly in the value received with DHB contract work, which is a real time constraint for the Board. How do we survive! The Pohlen Foundation team, Chaired by Lindsay Tisch QSO. Are ever active to fund raise , to support the operational excellence of Pohlen Hospital.. "They keep us going, when the going gets tough". For example, the one million dollars raised that created the 6 bed 'End of Life Wing', which gave us the ability to care with dignity and a loving family environment for terminally ill members of our community. " Pohlen Hospital is a model we should all celebrate". I mentioned wit earlier, her wish is a conference /school facility/ Locum Flat, She acknowledged Pohlen Board member Peter Thissen may want his generator painted Pink first !!! Pohlen  Board Chair David Gasquione and fellow Board member Leonie Tisch  definitely showed confidence in their General Manager. Members recognised her passion for what she wishes to achieve, and is pursuing a Health Professional Masters Degree in nursing. Impressive presentation.

What are you smiling about, Lachie Duncan.
I recently attended the Wahine 50 yea rcommerations in Wellington. While there my family laid some flowers in memory of my father. The card with them had a photo and his name on it. Later in the morning Ann and Ainsley were approached by two women who had noticed the Duncan on our identification name tags and had seen the card and photograph. Ann was asked "Are you any relation of Colin Duncan"? Ann replied" Yes, he was my father in law". The women introduced themselves and that they were from Melbourne, and were in the same group as Dad who walked the Milford Track the week before the sinking of the Wahine. They were also on the Wahine,  the night before the disaster and had a conversation with Dad. Ann found Andrew and I and introduced us, I had the Scottish walking stick that Dad actually used on the Milford Track, that was the only personal item retrieved from the Wahine. They recognised it straight away. Contact details were exchanged, and an email photo of Colin Duncan in a group picture of the Milford Track Tramper's. Probably one of the last photographs of Dad, and the walking stick was there as well. Perhaps strictly speaking, not a really happy thing but something that means a lot to our family; and does make us smile when we see it. The kindness of strangers is always cause for a smile.
