Changeover

President Peter Vossen congratulates President David Gasquoine

This week we celebrated that wonderful annual event 'Changeover' where the reins of Rotary Matamata leadership are handed over from the current to the incoming Board.
The venue was the wonderful new Civic and Memorial Centre where we had a mix and mingle evening. Incoming President David Gasquoine re-lived a little of his beginnings in Rotary as a Group Study Exchange student in the 1990's. David was delighted to have GSE team leader Greg Gasquoine from RC Cambridge and fellow team member Judge Paul Geoghegan join him for the evening along with a contingent of family, friends and neighbours. David was encouraged by Lachie and Merv to apply for GSE and David expressed his thanks to them. He had no idea where GSE would lead him!
Peter reflected on highlights of his year, supported by a slideshow out together by David H. (See full text at the end of the bulletin). We do love this visual look back over the year.
A Paul Harris Fellow award was made to Ann Duncan and a 3rd sapphire pin presented to outgoing District Governor Leonie (see below). In addition Peter selected David Hulme as his 'Rotarian of the Year' acknowledging David's work among other things, as chair of the District Conference Committee and his support of Peter in his role as President.
David H was in charge of photography for the evening. Photos can be viewed here

Don Stanley

We were all shocked to hear that one of our longest-standing members, Don Stanley passed away on 25th June after a short illness. Don was a Past President and champion of Matamata Rotary walkway projects, Concert by the Lake and many other Rotary service projects over decades in the club.
Don's funeral will be held at 1.30pm on Saturday at the Anglican Church. Please confirm your attendance with David J. Rotarians will provide a guard of honour.
Our deepest sympathies go to Jackie, Lynette and all Don's family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Our latest Paul Harris Fellow awards

Michelle took special pleasure is recognising Ann Duncan, wife of Rotarian Lachie, on behalf of Rotary Matamata has a Paul Harris Fellow. Ann was recognised for her work in our community, most notably through Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) where she worked for around 30 years until recently. Born in Taumarunui Ann was a primary school teacher. There she met and married Lachie. They had two children Fiona and Andrew, before moving to Matamata in 1981. Here Ann became involved in the Community Organisation Grants Scheme (COGS) for awhile, CAB and Food bank. She has long served St Andrew's Presbyterian Church and represented their Womens Fellowship and Rural Women on the National Council for Women (Matamata) for many years until its recent dissolution. Today Ann is Secretary of Foodbank. Ann acknowledged her thanks to Rotarians and particularly "her rock" Lachie.

It was David H's honour to speak to Leonie's award. Leonie is is well known and loved by us all. She proudly led the last District 9930 GSE team in 2013 when they travelled to District 5050 (Canada/USA). It was just before their departure that the club presented Leonie with a Paul Harris Fellow. This evening she was awarded a 3rd sapphire pin in recognition of her work over the last three years on the 'District Governor train'. Leonie is the first DG from Rotary Matamata and we are all very proud of her.

President Peter's final address

Ladies & Gentlemen
I have been greatly honoured to have served you as your President this Year as out club celebrated its 70thYear and also celebrated Leonie Tish become our District Governor.
I want to firstly acknowledge my Board of Directors this Year.
Lynette Stanley, David Gasquoine, Mike Farrell, Owen Farmilo and David Parker.  Immediate Past President Michelle Tanner, Treasurer Miranda Thomson, Secretary David Johnson, Bulletin Editor Stew Wadey and Programme Robert Stuart. Can I thank Graeme Motion for running the Bar and Eric as our Sergeant and Maz as Corporal,
You have all done sterling work and have brought various areas of expertise and knowledge which has resulted in a very productive and fun year.
There have been many highlights as we have just seen and it is hard to believe we “crammed” all that stuff in one year.
I have really enjoyed the variety of speakers this year and to name a few favorite’s we had Saskia Van Waagenburg speaking about her study Tour of Israel, Brain Hare the Aero plane manufacture, David White and his crusade against Family Violence. We had some fun club nights too. Who would ever forget Stew tripping over the power cable at our Melbourne Cup night so we all missed the final 200m.
The joining together with the Tauranga-TePapa club and supporting their car rally by setting up a working bee at StarFish turned out to be a success.
The Stanley Farm Lane opening, the Rural Support Evening, Concert by the Lake and the success of Leonie’s Conference.
Our Rotary Exchange Student Dani, showed what a successful initiative this programme is. Our first Interact Club lead by Michelle Tanner is now well established at Matamata College.
We inducted Carl Tookey as our latest member.
We donated 10K to Rural Support Trust, 5K to Westpac Helicopter Trust, 20K to StarFish Social Services and various other organisations.  We donated 30K to Leukemia and Blood Cancer from the Matamata Leukemia Research Trust.
We celebrated Michelle Tanner receiving the Service Award for a Polo Free World.
We celebrated Leonie Tisch and her successful District Governor Year and the promotion of her chosen charity Days for Girls.
And we celebrated the success of our conference.
I know I haven’t covered everything but what a ride and thank you each and every one of you.
The biggest thank you goes to my wife Chris, thanks for all your support and encouragement. You will be rewarded.
To David.  All the best for your Year, you have my full support.

Thank you Everyone.

And finally...
