Kia ora said Peter, fun, fellowship Rotary Club. Concert by the lake build up for this Sunday. Last Saturday working bee saw much achieved with enthusiastic endeavour. Many hands make light work! Which Peter drew comparisons to his recent sojourn to Swaziland, where he observed a cultural instinct of collective strength in their work, nobody worked alone in their close family network. Concert tickets still available , so good luck for our concert, and have a fun day being part of it.
Guest speaker, Maxine Viggers. Convenor of Matamata Branch, New Zealand Society of Genealogists.
Maxine presented slides of documents , that were in the main written with quill ink pens or later with fountain pens also with broad nibs.Which gave documents some character.
Maxine enthused on being a genealogist, said all you need is yourself and an internet connected computer to get started on this really great hobby. You can go at any pace you wish. In family history research, which can give rise to rather intriguing and some miss truth information is very enlightening. Some research may require some detective work, as sometimes a name has a letter added or missing in the document archives you can access. Most investigations into family history, cost very little, but there are some ancestry sites that do cost a significant subscription. Maxine gave a power point presentation on tracing the family history of William John Rodgers. Birth certificate, Parish of birth, census results showed he and his family relocated several times, land titles and even today locate those properties on Google Earth. Subsequent movement to other properties were also traced, but this in some situations can be frustrating to get the title information to actually pin point where a property was; way back in time. Mr Rodgers health demise records were identified and subsequent cause of death on his Death Certificate. Research even found a newspaper report and the a coroners report and findings on a drowning of one of his sons, and a hand written witness report plus a hand written police sergeants report supporting accidental death. So getting into being a genealogist, is easy now, due to online availability for pertinent information. Some useful web sites are:

What are you smiling about, David Wheadon.
David got reminded last week, when Kevin Sing was club fined for having his Margaret's passport to go and attend Tennis in Melbourne recently. As with Kevin and a few others on a Rotary oriented trip to Brazil few years ago, Put their passports in a security box. When they travelled onto Argentina. Grabbed passports out of their security box, through airport security, customs no problem, even though David had Kevin's Passport and Kevin had his!! That what's made David smile, I do think there was a hint of laughter as well by David.
Louise Trower and Charlene Conner proudly wearing their Pohlen Foundation name badges. They provided along with Jacob Henderson, a fun fund raiser Scissor, paper or stone hand game. A game played I suspect by many Rotarians when they were at school !! Club winner was Wade Linnell.
