Peter gave his usual warm welcome to a meeting for fun and fellowship, which is our Rotary Club. Acknowledged our guest speaker Reuben Jones and his parents Julie and Malcolm, Jean Muckle and Carol Metcalfe. Peter put the question" You have read this months Rotary Down Under"? He highlighted the article of Rotary Foundation PDG Bruce Manager, International Office and Foundation Services Rotary South Pacific & Philppines Office. Titled ' So Easy To Turn on a Tap'. He highlighted this is Water and Sanitation Month, especially when he sees in India many villages struggle to have the basics of good water and sanitation. He ends his editorial "Let's spend more time thinking about how lucky we are and how we can help those who aren't so lucky".
Guest speaker Reuben Jones , with his parents Malcolm and Julie Jones of Te Poi.
Year 13 and Head Boy Matamata College, Reuben Jones attended Rotary National Science and Technology Forum 2018. Reuben acknowledged he was awarded the Rotary Matamata sponsorship, on recommendation of Public Image Director David Parker and fellow committee member Robbie Pearson; after an interview process. So off to Auckland by Inter City bus, to further his knowledge on science's, Chemicals and evolving technology in New Zealand's primary dairy industry, namely technology in milk harvesting infrastructure.
He soon learnt New Zealand were innovation world leader's in many aspects. Intrigued in biological manipulation with Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of E-Coli and a significant protein derived from that, which allows new medical interventions to be safety practised. Was impressed with the passion of his lecturers and tutors at this Summer Science forum, to evaluate science and technology to prove an hypothesis. Realised the importance of being ethical. How important ethics and science was for integrity of findings. Appreciation of options in career opportunities in the wide scope of science and technology. Of course, being a student on campus at this level; required time management including washing ones clothes and participating in team building activities and attending a formal dinner.
So for Reuben, an amazing experience with like minded people of different ethnicity. Gave guidance for his career goal. Thanked Rotary Matamata for the opportunity to partake in this Science and Technology Forum.

What are you smiling about, Kevin Kent.
As members know, I have had a heart problem. Good medical support has that under control. But I have to be mindful that I must not get chest infections, colds and stuff. Unfortunately, I caught a sniffle bug off my grandchild, that developed into me having a noisy wheeze. Which was a bit inconvenient for Trena at night. I Prayed for the wheeze to go away..... it did !!!!!. What makes me smile, Trena now checks on me during the night to make sure I am still alive , as I make no sound at all !!.
Mr Kent... Teacher Extraordinaire.
