Evening all, welcome. Thank you to our hosties tonight , great ambience of purple theme and decoration that was eye catching to say the least on entering our meeting venue. Michelle not only our guest speaker  on 'End Polio Now' but the lead Club champion for Purple Pinky Day , Jane Belton adding purple plants courtesy of Mitre 10. Had contact from Mike Farrell, towards the end of his professional up skilling for his Optometrist vocation; He will be getting Rotary Matamata annual Food Bank appeal underway next week. Acknowledged firstly Richard Metcalfe, who is happy that he celebrated another birthday; that he donated $600 to Rotary Matamata, with the caveat that a Emergency Response Kit  be purchased. Then Richard and Carol Metcalfe also presented US$1000 towards Club Foundation contribution. President David ,sincerely articulated appreciation for such support to the aims of Rotary. Farm Watch: Been a good Week on the farm, 37mls and more to come very welcome. Growth 65kgs/ha/day. 2500 kgs/ha/pasture cover. Soil Temp 17c, cows 2.1kg/ms/day aided by 3kgs supplementary feed. 14days into mating, 77% of cows been up to AI, on track for a high 90% range for 3 week submission. Next week, New Zealands' largest company, the Fonterra Co-Operative  convene  on the Lichfield site , the Fonterra Shareholders Annual General Meeting. The owners will be presented with last seasons details, election of director result, plus vote on issues required by the constitution, including directors honoraria; which President David is the Honorarium Chair.  David also asked,  "has anyone been contacted by Ridgeway Hut Trust, Kaimai's. Reference. Picnic Table(s)". Directors had received and discussed written contact of enquiry for support from that Trust, but not had committed as a committee; of a specific response.
It is us that should be toasting Michelle Tanner PHF, for a very inspiring Club meeting. Purple Pinky Day Theme , soupe du jour.
Michelle Tanner our guest speaker, introduction was given good justice by Brian Hunter. Michelle as always gives 100% enthusiasm, to ensure we stay focussed to eradicate from the world; Polio. Her endeavours did not go un-noticed to have a visual impact, with pertinent information and also an agreeable taste to the palate range of soups, a credit to Michelle and her helpers for our 18th meeting of this Rotary Term. Michelle urged that we be surveilliant on our environment here and overseas, where potential hot spots of the virus may be waiting for the next victim. Polio still showing up. Pakistan last year had 5 cases, already  this calendar year 6, similar with Afghanistan 7 last year, 16 this year. The recent Papua New Guinea polio scare, was not Polio Virus. But a vaccine derived virus, that was exacerbated by a declined polio vaccination policy. That has now been addressed. " We cannot stop now! We must continue with the goal of eradication". If that can be achieved,  US$ 25 billion saved for Rotary to direct to other world health initiatives. Rotary promised to eradicate polio, and hence ' we are that close 'saying; in doing so. But Rotary still has a funding challenge, so a bit short at the moment. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation actually gives two US dollars to every US$1 , that Rotary commits to polio eradication. What an incentive for Rotarians to consider to put funds into Rotary , targeted for End Polio Now. " Lets finish this" said Michelle, as she asked Murray Wills to speak on effects of polio in one's family. Only a generation ago. Polio was once rife in the Matamata district. "my father was one of those, from a very fit young 11 year old boy  to be afflicted with Infantile Paralysis, otherwise known as Polio". His treatment included with other kids in a isolation ward, NO close contact with family at all, minimum distance was 30 feet behind glass windows..  Having befriended fellow kids in his isolation ward, some of which actually died next to him  Body braces worn day and night, with months of on going rehabilitation. Which included exercises for their fingers and arms. To take out, the tedious boredom they had competitions; with who could roll up bandages , including rolling them forwards and backwards the fastest. Rehab continued when released to home, and was only allowed to take his body braces off at night. Plus the roads were mainly metal roads, that became quite an arduous task for a frequent three a week visits to a Cambridge Clinic. Post-Polio Syndrome raised its head, which  saw his father confined to bed, sometimes for weeks. My father was lucky, passing away at 87, a lot different to those he lived with , in that isolation ward. Murray made a special acknowledgement to Michelle, who has tirelessly worked and dedicated so much of her time to help eradicate the awful disease. Eric Muckle
thanked Michelle for her commitment to the cause, asked Murray to come forward as well to receive appropriate acclamation for such a personal family insight.

Well, as you know I am interested in equine thoroughbred's, got some inspiration from JImmy Gibbs, an icon in our New Zealand Horse Racing Industry. He has been involved with 138 winners since his retired from horse training!! My Dad,was an inspirational role model, from my early age; led by example whether be sport, community involvement and skill sets. Spoke his mind, but respected other peoples opinions whether family, business people and community people. Hated the colour purple !!!! ha ha. My Mum too, an inspiration. Said many a time, " Put your mind to it, you can do it". Then I have to acknowledge the inspiration of John Bougen, to whom I was his second in charge in a management position.
