Good evening from President Elect David Gasquione, as chair of tonight's meeting.  With a wry smile "I was not told of members attending in gum boots!, I hope I have no dictatorship in my year as your President". Fantastic weekend at District 9930 Conference. Matamata Rotarians to the fore, noted to be a happy bunch. Our District Governor Leonie Tisch had a well attended conference which included very good guest speakers, and chose a very dry witted confident Master of Ceremony; who added to the very enjoyable informative worth while assembly of Rotarians. David Hulme and his team obviously did a lot of homework, to produce a well organised conference."A hard act to follow for next District conference organiser's". "Lisette Hulme spoke so well, in the lead up to introducing Celeste Mergens to the stage". "Natalie van der Goes demonstrated her skill as a flautist, that was so appreciated by her audience". "Miranda and her team of artistic directors, suitably applying glitter in gentlemen's hair and facial adornments and scenes from the Titanic hanging from our necks, which added another dimension of the team spirit of Rotary Matamata, that was remarked on by fellow Rotarians from different parts of the District". Then of course Michelle Tanner so suitably stunned, who received a Rotary International Regional Award for acknowledgment of her time and effort to eradicate Polio from the world. Rotary International President's Representative, Basker Chockalingam presented that Regional Award; the highest award ever presented to a Rotarian in District 9930. " Appropriate recognition". Basker Chockalingam  snippet of his address to conference. noted there are more Rotary Clubs than MacDonald's restaurants in this world.
Guest speaker Sheryn Clothier (R) with her parents           Heather & John Dean plus husband Steven Clothier.

Guest Speaker Sheryn Clothier, fifteen years a  member of the New Zealand Tree Crops Association. Eleven years writing the Tree Crops magazine. Helps people with small blocks plant tree crops to support flora and fauna, plus get some fruit in its many forms from a broad spectrum of tree crops. There are no native tree specie that are productive, so all our fruit bearing tree's are from genetic importation from many parts of the world. The Waikato region has a very good climate to grow many tree crop varieties. Sheryn likes to promote fruit trees that promote our pollinating Bee's with  a good food source. Healthy Bees mean Honey which is $$$ money! We have in New Zealand a Bee Hive density of 2.65 Hives per square kilometre. Other countries vary from .3 to 1.1 Hives per square kilometre. "Prevent starving Bees, plant trees". There is not much outlook to make a fortune out of tree crops, but it is fun. Pecan trees are not common, and break easily. Chestnuts grow well in the Waikato, but not a favourite for some reason. Growers need to produce a minimum of six tonnes , for export. Hazel Nuts are really nice fresh, commercially viable.Walnuts have many varients, but Rex variety most grown in the South Island and getting to be a vibrant industry down there. Merrick variety suited to the North Island. Harvesting techniques are evolving in that regard. Macademia , Asimoya (Poor man's banana) are being grown. Almonds are Research and development in the Waikato at the moment, but Almond milk is in consumer demand. Persimmons are commercially grown. Feijoa are of South American origin, keeping quality for export. 126 varieties of apples in New Zealand. Cider varieties are shown to be more nutritious than newer genetic apples. Monty Surprise 3x better than Pacific Rose.  Seedling grow better than grafted, and more resistant to disease. Sheryn is cynical about research. Niche crops are high risk, but enjoyable. The variety of the Waikato climate is huge, so some tree specie 'are horses for courses' where you are situated. Maximum nutrition starts in the soil. Organics preferred.

What are you smiling about, John Fernyhough.
Eldest grandson Liam, saving for a car. rearing some white faced Hereford calves to grow some equity to turn into cash. Granddad John, offered to help feed the calves milk and meal in the paddock, the first time the calves had been let out of the rearing shed. But the basic rule of shutting a gate on a farm was disregarded, when driving into the paddock with the milk cafeteria. Calving headed for the open gate !! Granddad stayed in the ute, while Liam sprinted at a fair pace, jumped a fence and just beat them to the gate.........While John smiled,to see the energy of young people.

Now our President elect
Vice President David Gasquione appreciated the opportunity to be selected by Merv King and Lachie Duncan for a GSE to the USA circa 1998. David was pleased to hear GSE returnee's points of view five years on; at Conference. Group Study Exchange has been withdrawn. Bulletin Editor understands District 9930 actually started the New Zealand Group Study Exchange concept. So observing in real time in our Club, returnee GSE members in Peter Vossen and David Gasquione commendable leadership contribution to our community. Perhaps some debate ensue on whether GSE is actually 'done and dusted'!
