Evening all, and welcome. Especially our guest speakers Angela Coupar, Rosemary Locke and chaperone known to many, Joan Locke. "Brings memories back to old times of Peria Hall Tennis Club, Tom Grant Drive , I must have aged!" said President David. Thank you David Hulme who deputised for me last week. Past and elect president unavailable due commitments and travel. Farm Watch: cold mornings, has seen soil temps down to 14.5c from 16c, grass growth struggling to get to 60kg/dm/ha/day(75 kgs same time last year), 25mls last weekend. Mating targets don't seem to be considered entertaining, but mirth and laughter ensued on "getting your mating right". Dairy Farmers realise this is a most crucial time of the season, to aim for at the very least 90% submission rate in the first 21 days of (AI) Artificial Insemination and 75% incalf rate at 6 weeks. A good result at this time,  means a compact calving next season....for that important 'days in milk' for revenue line. Empty (MT) rate should be in a single digit number. " So getting the girls ready to  cycle, requires good quality feed input when at the same time, they are reaching the peak of their milk solid production ". Also now, summer support crops are being sown, springtails and slugs love juvenile seedlings. So a pro active appropriate management  treatment is essential.  Pukeko can do a heap of damage to  maize plantings. So a somewhat entertaining interaction with members , concluded with the  indicative support of moving forward to be a 2019 student host Rotary Club; for hosting a student from Europe. President David had three of the  four minimum of host families right now. So that process will be initiated for Club involvement.
Guest speakers, Angela Coupar (L) and Rosemary Locke  . 'Guide Dog Services'
Canine guest professionally at work, Honor.
    The complete team.
Angela, Guide Dog Instructor. Rosemary has a good quality of life, with the skills of Honor.
Gary Moore introduced Angela Coupar who then thanked our Club for a warm welcome for Rosemary and herself this meeting. Angela pursued her goal of being a Guide Dog Trainer, by completing a four year cadetship inn Scotland. Romance and marriage saw her domicile in New Zealand. Continued to become a guide Dog Instructor based through Homai breeding  centre, Manurewa, Auckland. She mentioned the contribution of Ian Cox, to grow the 'Pass out" rate of trained dogs from 6 to 65. Homai produces 96% self bred dogs, mainly Labrador. Their breeding policy has become selective for the appropriate traits for being a guide dog. Artificial insemination for that passing of genetic potential, is a great advancement to further that. 97 puppies in training right now, that is still short of to satisfy the waiting list for a guide dog. Welping statistics, see more females born that males, so artificial breeding science is now a vital tool, although 'outside' genetic material is required , to prevent any chance of in breeding. Puppy training basically starts the day they are born, and volunteer training 'families'; a very much appreciated 9 week commitment. Some training 'families' have volunteered 15 times, to which Rosemary a benefactor of those volunteer endeavours. !2 to 16 months average time in intensive training for the canine. 12/20 weeks of support training for a pairing up of a person and guide dog. A bit of specialised training , to whether an urban or rural environment. It is an important job for a Guide Dog Instructor, to match up a dog to a handler for a successful  outcome. Rosemary told us, that dogs are retired at about 9 to 10 years of age, and are retired to homes, that appreciate a companion animal. Rosemary has just retired due to age guide dog at home,  and now partnered with her new Labrador, Honor. Both dogs get on very well at home. Rosemary gave an insight, of the independence a guide dog  gives to a blind person. She has had guide dogs since 1995, and gave the communication messages through the dog harness and action of her canine. For example, approaching either stairs going up, or going down. Zebra crossings, and even her guide dog interpreting a name, such as post office and leading the way. Modern technology now has even an APP, on her phone that can read what is on the supermarket shelf; plus of course reads mail etcetera. Rosemary appreciates so much  the support of Angela Coupar" A most wonderful instructor". Angela concluded, that training guide dogs receives no Government funding, totally relies on donations and has a big waiting list for guide dogs. New Zealand  is an active member of an International  organisation, most important for such things as genetic material sharing, information dissemination. Leo Kingston thanked our speakers and Honor, for a most interesting factual presentation.
Angela Coupar also wished to make it official !!! " Rosemary's Mother, Joan Locke; makes the best scones ever since I first met her in 1995".

'Who Has Inspired Me' ..Sheryl Ertel.
Definitely my Mum. I left school or school left me!. Family travelled around Australia. Mum married at 21, widowed at 30 with four kids. Sought a new life for us in New Zealand. Re married to a person she thought would support that, but that turned out to be quite the contrary. We spent 6 years running around New Zealand to be as far away from that person as possible. Mum was a giver, hard working, helped those hard up, helped others of similar situations she has been through. Forgot about her own problems, to help others.
Yes, my Mum was an inspiration to me.
