President Peter welcomed everyone to this meeting, fun, fellowship for all. Acknowledged guests Alice and Harriet Tanner, Michelle's Mother and Father, Patrick Roskam & Brooke Dunbar, co presidents Matamata Interact and also Lyn Fraser-Jones, Rotary Maketu. Peter highlighted the Rotary Theme for February,Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month. Rotary International  President Ian Riseley editorial in the latest Rotary Down Under advancing peace through Rotary service, a thought provoking commentary. There are five , one day Presidential Conferences organised around the Rotary world , on the topic of Rotary being proactive in Peace building. A sergeants fine also Peter ,for not acknowledging his good wife Chris as a guest also, at our meeting-- tut tut!!
The reason for Michelle's Family all being in attendance, was to witness just reward for her efforts, tenacity, determination and compassion for not only being actively involved in 'End Polio Now', but also for a most successful project that brought four Rotary Cubs of the World and a private sponsor together ,to rejuvenate a school from dirt floors and chalk slates to Ipod computers, fit for purpose constructed classrooms, toilets and other embellishments. With that came a new name, School of Juang (Pakistan) Literacy Centre. Michelle Tanner's unselfish endeavour acknowledged by being presented a Paul Harris Fellowship, by District Governor 9930 Leonie Tisch. Club president Peter in his introduction to this well deserved presentation, gave a chronological review of Michelle's contribution to Rotary Matamata and Rotary world wide. Members responded by acclamation.

What are you smiling about, Stew Wadey.
Tried to read and decipher President Peter's hybrid Dutch/English hand written notes, of his excellent introduction spiel leading up to the Paul Harris Fellowship presentation to Rotarian Michelle Tanner. I smile at Peter's honesty that I would have some difficulty to read his writing,so true!

                                                     Parting Thought.
"The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing, would suffice to solve most of the worlds problems."

Attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, presented by Rotarian Glenda Milligan

Footnote: Glenda suggests this parting thought, would be borne out by Michelle's example of leadership described at this Club meeting.

  • Peter Thissen reports that things are looking good at concert venue, sown grass areas have been grazed by sheep. Some lake weed due to warm humid weather. Peter and Ineke have been in the dingy , extracting some of that weed. Few more hands  this month, to supplement the help he is already getting from members to do final preparations, so to transform the site into Waikato's premier open air concert venue. Peter will indicate when we need a team at the venue, to complete some required work.
