Peter welcomed everyone to this meeting, which he endorses Rotary; Live it, Express it, Expand It: Sadly announced the Passing of retired member Dick Hemming's wife, passing, funeral announcement will be in the paper. Peter made reference to guest speaker Rob Donderwinkel meeting up with him and Chris in Brussels City centre, as Rob knew the way to attend an international soccer football match; just a few years ago! Peter then drew our attention to the Current Commonwealth Games, with a few stats and the three name changes of these games. "Good to seethe competition rivalry".
Guest Speaker, Rob Donderwinkel, Group Leader-- Matamata Scouts
Rob explained where Matamata Scouts fits within Scouts New Zealand, HQ in Wellington.
The model he implements for his Matamata group, is the same one nationwide for   >15000 members and >5000 adult volunteers. Rob made the comparison that 1970's & 1980's had a peak of 40000+ members. The model includes adventurous activities, moral values of respect and positive attitude. Help to implement the model, is supported by a small enthusiastic full time staff, at the National Office in Wellington. Rob supports the 'Do what is Right' mantra. As with parents following their children's progress through life' journey, He became involved with Matamata Scouts when his son joined the Scout Group. At that point only Kea's and cub Scout sections were operative, No Scout Troup. Now a healthy mixed gender membership of 51. Made up of 19 Keas- 5 to 8 years,17 Cub Scouts-8 to 11 years and Scouts 11 to 14 years. The next section in Scouting is Venturers 14 to 18 years followed by Rovers 18 to 26 years of age. Part of the new model for the Scout section is social skills and personal development, Community spirit, discipline and respect for the Flag. In their progression in the Matamata Scouts experience, they would the skill of being reliable, sensible, have life balance, a community value and opportunities that are there to grasp. They will leave with the basic knowledge to progress to be our future leaders. An exciting new element that appeals to Rob, is (YSAR) Youth Search and Resue. Venture age group 14 to 18 years, Anticipated a 2 year learning process of intensive theory and practical outdoor simulated scenario exercises in the Kaimai's. That one day for sure, those skilled youth will be a real time community asset in (SAR) Search and Rescue call outs. Scouts are now in the fund raising mode to attend the next Jamboree at Mystery Creek, that will be held over the Christmas/New Year period from December 2019 to January 2020. Rob also sees an opportunity to advance Scouts aviation awareness, as the Waharoa aerodrome hosts international airline initial pilot skill training schools, Aero Club, Abinitio Flying School and a Gliding Club. Rob started his address, that he welcomed the opportunity to speak to Rotary on Matamata Scouts. He finished with "Lets stay in contact". He is Matamata Scouts Group Leader, he has a group committee that are not leaders, and a small team of warranted leaders that he is mindful of being of appropriate mixed gender and within the expected ratio of youth to adult leaders. Plus as with all volunteer organisations, fund raising for group asset and administration responsibilities, but fund raising for activities to develop our young people. Thank You.

What are you smiling about, Wade Linnell.
I and a small volunteer team are off to Fiji, to build a refuge home for girls and woman who are either trying to get out of the sex industry or other difficult situations. I enjoy being a Rotarian, respected in the community, doing good, helping others, leader in community initiatives, that is what makes me smile.

Wahine Disaster - On April 10th 1968 the Lyttelton–Wellington ferry Wahine ran aground and sank at the entrance to Wellington Harbour. Poor weather affected a dawn service that was to be held at the Eastbourne, Wellington Wahine Mast Memorial on 10 April 2018 at 6.30am; to mark the 50th anniversary of the Wahine disaster in memory of those who died. The tragedy had an extensive impact on the families of those who died.
A total of 734 passengers and crew boarded the Wahine on Wednesday 10 April 1968.
Tragically 53 lost their lives – 51 on the day and another two later from the injuries they sustained as a result of the shipwreck.

Our fellow Club Rotarian Lachie Duncan, lost his father in this tragedy .
District Conference early bird registration offer, has now expired. Members who have not registered, who now find their circumstance position changed and could consider to attend. .www.9930conference.org for online registration.

Matamata Festival of Brass, Sunday 20th May 2018
Volunteers required to help as we always do every year, for supporting Matamata Brass present Matamata Festival of Music. This year, the Festival clashes with District Conference. Of which,  two thirds of our Club members are attending.
David Wheadon is our Club champion to organise a team, to help with logistics during the performances. So only a small pool of Club members are in a position of making themselves available, for either the morning or afternoon or even all day; that has to be seriously considered please.
